This issue has been raised before. Our 2001 1.4SE Petrol is currently in at the dealer for a fix on this. Symptom is a clicking/clonking when lifting off and taking up drive, happens in most gears but worst around town. I understand the fix is to bond the drive shafts in place.

The dealer tels me there is no bulletin from Audi re a problem on the petrol model, only the diesel. And that they can't detect the problem - which is hard to understand as it's pretty bloody obvious. I'm now having to go in on Saturday morning to take them on a test drive to demonstrate the fault, despite the fact they've had the car since Monday.

How many of you guys have had this problem (and had it fixed) on a petrol version?

Incidentally, the new petrol 1.4 Sport they've given me as a courtesy car doesn't have this problem - the drive train feels so much more solid. The sports suspension, though firm, also deals with city pot holes so much better than our SE, which doesn't seem to have enough suspension travel.

Cheers

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

We have exact same symptoms in our 2000 1.4SE Petrol.

Its in the garage today for a service and I've asked to have it looked at/attended to. Its only recently become noticeable but its certainly annoying. OUr car has done 11k miles.

I'll let you know what they say...

Jimmy/Dave,

I DID have the same problem with my A2. Since she was with my dealer last week, I do not hear it anymore. My dealer didn't replace the driveshafts though, but the bearings in the MacPhersons. This might be the (another?) solution. Point your dealer to this when you bring it in. To read more about my noise-problems and possible solutions, see topic General Discussions page 4/A new A2 owner!.

Good luck!

Jimmy,

Lots & lots of A2 owners have suffered this problem, and I would have said its happened to as many petrol cars as diesel. I believe your dealer is very poorly informed, but if he says the fault does not apply to petrol versions, then ask him why the factory now bond them in.

The surest way of repeating the sound/fault is probably made when the engine is cold. Accelerating a little in first gear and quickly backing off the accelerator is all that is generally needed to obtain a clonk. Of course as the situation gets worse it exists under countless situations.

Thanks guys, helpful feedback. I'll use this when I speak to them tomorrow. Shouldn't be doing this at only 7k miles.

Got our car back this afternoon,

Service department recognised that there was a problem but had never experienced it before. They have contacted Audi UK for help.

I mentioned this forum and the various problems raised with the driveshafts on early cars, and the glueing of them as a fix etc.. They seemed genuinely interested so hopefully they will take a look here themselves.

Its a shame so many of the older threads have been deleted ...

Demonstrated the fault to the service technician this morning. He agreed there was a noise, similar to those he has experienced on diesels. He will speak to Audi technical dept on Monday and let me know the outcome. Seemed genuinely interested in helping. Watch this space.

Strange question I know. You don't line in Stoke on Trent do you?
I say this because your story is EXACTLY what happened to me. I don't just mean the noise in a 2001 1.4SE but the fact that the dealer had my car from Monday and I had to visit on a Saturday to demostrate this noise to them. They also said that they hadn't got any previous history on this problem...
Sounds too familar....

Just insist that they replace the driveshafts. I had mine done (after a massive argument) and they were fine after that....
Best of luck...
Roy
