Drivers Side Door Tweeter

The Drivers side door tweeter seems to have stopped working. The main speaker is still working fine. Do you think the wire has just come unplugged or something?

does anybody know whether there is a crossover or if its just a capacitor? the tweeter itself i would imagine is unlikely to be broken.

please somebody help :) i suck at stuff like this

Sorry, cant help myself, however a few forum guys have done some major mods to their speakers in the past - I'm sure they'll reply when they pop in.

I was reluctant to answer anything because I'm not sure either...
I _can_ tell you that there's no crossover, just the capacitator stuff you mention so it's really basic.
I don't recall the connections being of a type that comes loose easily, so I don't expect that to be the problem either.

Which leaves you and me with...not a clue ;)
All I can say is that you could try to do some testing:
- does it malfunction at all volume levels? (could rule out connection problems)
- did you try and pry off the grill? (although hardly anything can be seen from there)
- and last but not least, you could (and would have to) remove the door panels so you can access all wiring and/or remove the tweeter (it cannot be done from the front, unfortunately).

There have been some posts on removing the door panels before. Do a search for 'remove door panel' in the archived posts for the Audio section and you will run into the procedure, even with some pictures (or links to them).

Good luck. I'm curious to know what might be the cause, so keep us all posted.

I think im going to have to pluck up courage to take the door panel off because i hate rattles and i KNOW that if i take a door panel off its going to rattle until the rest of eternity. I may just bite the bullet and do it one weekend!

I can remember in my golf, there were little brown electrical clips which you could unplug when taking taking out the tweeter, perhaps is the same in the A2 and one of those has gone dry or something? I wish one of the guys who have done massive stereo mods in their A2s would see this!! :)

I will keep you posted!

edit: oh.. and one more thing, very rarely the big speaker down there cuts out for a moment or two then comes back in.

My stereo mod wasn't massive, but I did take off my panels several times, installed my own speakers and moved the tweeters from the front to the back door and back several times too. But having said that, I'm not like Erskine (EF_MAX) or Mason for example, no ;)
The connectors are of a type that clips into a locked position, so very unlikely to dislodge by itself.
Taking off the doorpanel is not a very hard thing to do, especially of you read up in this forum first. Nor will it cause any additional rattles if you do it in a sensible way.

Your last comment gets me worried a bit.
Maybe loose connectors behind the radio, even. Although that would not be able to cause a problem with just the tweeter; that cabling is combined up until the bass-driver.
Or a slight short-circuit that leads the headunit to temporarily disable a channel when it occurs?

yeah this has properly confused me too, the fact that the main speaker cuts out very very occasionally. i just hope its some poxed up wiring just inside the door else it wouldnt be just the tweeter broken.

I think i am going to take the door panel off.. it doesnt look too hard in that thread, just need to find some time while in day light!!

Thanks for your help Swiv!!! I will keep you informed
