DRL wiring

So been talking with @ICowie about the DRLs he has just had fitted to his car.

We're looking at some options but the one I'm most keen on is a y piece to allow the existing wiring harness to remain intact and to then branch out to standard headlamp plug for the headlamp itself, leaving the ability to wire in some kind of cheap 4 pin connector that allows the DRLs to operate.

Another reason for this is that I fully expect the DRLs to fail (they are cheap) so want to make a reversible change easy.

Anything out there feasible off the shelf that I haven't seen yet?

Not exactly sure what the wiring is to connect. If you are using the headlights as per the continent then very little extra required. But if you are running completely separate lights either in the fog location or near by, I do not see how the wiring would simply be a y connector. Everything is reversible until you cut holes out of grills or bumpers that can't be covered. As far as connectors are concerned I have used these before with great succes

The do most VAG plugs, sockets, prewired plugs, pins you get the idea.

I have used them to repair abs wiring, brake wear wiring, fuel temp sensor wiring and coolant temp sensor wiring, always getting the prewired plug / socket. Have a chat with them and tell them what connections you want and they may make something for you.

Ok cheers. The drls in question can be stuck to the very bottom of the light making then look like they sit between the light and bumper...on the outside so not integrated into the lamp.

They use wiring from indicators and side lamp so change from white to amber when you turn in the indicator.

All for the sum of 8.49 for 2x45cm..

I usually swap out for a set of standard halogen lamps come MOT time anyways ;)

Hence another reason for ensuring easy reversibility

There is a position on the main light switch that is dedicated to feeding DRL's. I'm not sure of its position but it is marked "DFL". The plug that connects each headlight has an unused pin position. There isn't a pin there, so you need to insert an extra pin at that location. This is an elegant way to get the DRL feed into the headlight(s). Obviously you need headlights that can be split. Those cheap DRL's will have very limited life. I'm speaking from experience, here. The more you pay, the better the quality and life. I have just fitted some headlights with genuine Audi Q7 DRL's. I paid ~£500 for them. I now have a surplus pair of units with my my own design of DRL's incorporated. I'll have no use for them so it makes sense to dispose of them.

David pictures are worth a thousand words. Yes know about the DRL pin issue but didn't think the wiring was built into the main lighting loom for UK spec cars. Hope I am wrong. Others have had to run a line from the DRL pin on the switch forward to feed DRLs.

It isn't and I can't see where anyone has indicated that it might be? It is quite an effort to route a wire from the "DFL" pin on the main lighting switch into the engine bay! Again, it is necessary to add a further connector pin to the lighting switch socket to make the link to the "DFL" location. I think that I ran a spare wire at the same time!
