Dual Mode Seatbelts

Was cleaning OYO today and made an interesting (well, interesting to me!) discovery. The passenger seatbelts are dual mode, sometimes called A/ELR.
I checked in the owner's manual, and sure enough, it does mention this in passing, but it is hardly well advertised!

What does it mean in reality? You can place objects (like childseats, or bags of shopping) on the passenger seat, pull the belt around it, & clip into the buckle as normal. Then pull the belt webbing out all the way from the retractor, and let it wind back in. You will hear a clicking noise as the belt ratchets up. It will not go loose and floppy, it will just get tighter. This is the ALR (automatic locking retractor) mode. Release the buckle and let the belt wind fully back in and the ratcheting will stop - it reverts back to the normal ELR (emergency locking retractor) mode.
Meant for child seats, useful for odd loads on the seats when the boot is full. Also makes you feel much better protected if you are a passenger and the driver is behaving like a hooligan!
Any sort of ALR is illegal for the driver (it might actually prevent you from reaching all of the controls!), so it is only on the passenger retractors.

Hope this might be useful for someone if they are not aware of it.

Best regards

Richard
