Dublin M50 Toll

Thought I would post my experience of using the new barrier free Dublin M50 Toll. I know it's not something that most of you will experience, but if you visit Dublin you might learn from my mistakes. The first thing to say is that the M50 car park has gone and that has to be good.

My first mistake was to not go onto the internet and visit www.eflow.ie. Summer holidays and a faulty cable modem is my excuse, which also explains my absence from this site too.

Had I visited the site, I could have preregistered my vehicle registration and payment details. A camera would have recognised my number plate and 2.50 Euro would have been taken automatically. As I didn't, I had until 8pm the day after passing the toll to pay 3 Euro by phone. The problem with this payment method is that the telephone number is displayed on temporary road side signs and it is a low call number only available from a telephone in the Irish Republic. UK mobiles are no use. The other problem is that the signs are right at the point where the road takes a detour around the old toll booths, which makes them impossible to read as you need to concentrate on negotiating the diversion.

When we got to our destination, I got onto the internet and went to the Eflow site to pay on-line, where I discovered my next problem. Their payment system does not like Apple computers! So I got on the phone and paid that way. I asked if I could prepay for the return trip, which I was to make the next day, but was told that this was not possible. I explained that I needed a telephone number to ring from outside the Irish Republic and was given a 800 number.

When I returned home I rang the 800 number, but it was unobtainable. I tried various combinations of international dialling codes in front of it, but still nothing. So I rang our hosts in Dublin and got them to ring Eflow to get the number. Got a 0845 number which worked.

I know the system is new and there are bound to be teething problems, but for tourists like me, the current system is a pain.

Thanks for the reminder John :)

I live in Leeds but work in Cork & when I drove back down a couple of weeks ago I actually thought the new system wasn't yet operational given the way the info was displayed as you approach to old toll booths. I've just rung them this morning & expected to have to pay either €6 or €46 based on the info on the eflow website (it was 2 weeks ago today that I drove down)

For unregistered users, if you don't pay your toll before 8pm on the day following your journey, a penalty of €3 is added to the outstanding amount.

If you fail to pay the toll and this €3 penalty within the next 14 days, a further penalty of €40 will be levied.

Failure to pay the full amount due within a further 56 days will result in an additional €100 penalty. Then if you still have not paid the total amount due, legal proceedings will be initiated.

but I was only charged €3. I'm half expecting that I'll still receive a penalty letter, but at least there will be electronic proof of a payment being made today.

Living in Dublin, I've had a tag on the car for a few years so nothing changed for me bar the fact that the barriers are now gone.

It's great at the weekends, but doesn't make much difference in peak traffic during the week. It's just moved the traffic jam up the road by half a mile. I'm hoping it will be better when the road widening is complete. Whenever that will be.

I believe they are being lenient in terms of penalties for the first few weeks until people get used to the system.

Guess what I got in the post this morning? Two requests for payment:mad: The toll was paid within the required time and I have the receipt to prove it. What a useless bunch eflow are!

They had major problems with the technolgy in the first few weeks. Just ignore them. I'm sure you can prove that you did pay if they chase you again. There were a lot of complaints of people receiving demands in error.

Hi Ken,

I think that it would be a mistake to ignore them as Eflow have passed the alleged debt to a debt collection agency called EPC. I rang them, but they only seemed to be set up to accept payments not resolve problems. It seemed to be one of those overseas call centres. I like to think I am a good citizen and always pay my debts, but poor service such as this can only be bad news for users of the toll road. The payment system for infrequent users seems to be a complete shambles. I hate to think what this is costing the Irish tax payer.

Let me give you example of another difficulty I have had with their system. I went to the eflow web page and followed the links to the section where I could submit a query to their customer services. The link did not work - server error. It seems there are a lot of unhappy customers!

I'm sure that my payment will eventually be acknowledged, but it is worrying that although I have done nothing wrong, I am being treated in this manner. Guilty until I prove myself innocent!:(

Is there a prepay box you can buy for the toll, like there is for the Dartford crossing and M6 toll here in England? It's a good system, particularly for the Dart tag.

Hi Trevorswaine,

There are three options if I remember right. They are:

Buy a tag (transponder),
Register for video number plate recognition, or
Post payment.

The first two require you to set up an account and are aimed at frequent users. The last one is aimed at infrequent users - like me.

If you want to know more visit the eFlow site:

Hi All,

Some months later...

Just back from a busy visit to Dublin, including a trip on the M50 toll road. I would love to report that the payment teething problems have been sorted out, but guess what?

Tried to pay at 4 PAYZONE outlets, system down.

Tried to pay by phone, gave up after hanging on for ages listening to Queen being interrupted by someone telling me that they were too busy answering the phone.

Tried to pay on a Windows PC using Google's Chrome browser, but it takes Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers only.

Managed to pay eventually. Hurray!

My friend has to go through it each way to work every day and she has had unending hassle with eflow. She has a tag and has done from the start, but they still sent her threatening letters on a regular basis, despite several reassurances from different staff members that the matter was resolved.

In her last phone call to them she told them she was heavily pregnant and was holding them responsible for her high blood pressure and that if she got one more letter from them they would be getting one in return, from her solicitor.

Problem solved!

Not M50 related, but relates to the electronic tag. Recently they merged two companies and now the tag can also be used for paying fees for certain car parks in the city. This was on an opt in basis so I didn't bother as we don't park in the city that much.

However, my wife was reviewing our bank account today and noticed that the tag company was deducting €144 per week for the last 4 weeks. It's normally €144 every two months.

Turns out they decided to turn on the car park option for everyone as "a trial" but never told us. My wife was scanned going into a car park 3 weeks ago (even though she took a ticket and paid as normal) but wasn't scanned on the way out. The system then thought she had parked the car for two weeks so we were charged €16 per day for that period. Somebody obviously realised it was an error and the charges stoped after 14 days. I still had to query it and ask for a refund.

The technology really sucks. There are so many people with similar stories relating to overcharging or erroneous charging.

Hello Hepburn,

Have you convinced that Husband of yours to do the decent thing and buy you an A2?
