dull thud/ knocking from front near side wheel

Happy Christmas Guys!

Since yesterday there has been a dull thud/ knocking sound coming from somewhere near the front near side wheel. I checked both front springs and could find neither cracks nor anything missing. Also there is no give or noise when I pull the wheel from side to side.
For six months now there has been a rattle on this side, which seem to start after a tour of the beautiful, but pot holed roads of Co. Cork.
Could there be a connection perhaps? And most importantly do you think the car is currently safe to drive, until I can get it checked out at a garage after the holidays?

Sorry, I had should have mentioned that the knocking sound occurs when I drive over small potholes or; ruts in the road etc. (not on smooth tarmac).

Thanks David,

I'll get it checked out when I return from the holidays.

I had a knocking sound on the driver's side, when I bought the car and had the antirole bar droplinks replaced, which fixed the problem; but this does seem to be more of a dull thud than the higher pitch knocking from the droplink .

Hi Andy
Your 2001 car will have the old style roll bar with integral plastic sleeves where the bushes sit. Rust gets under the sleeves and can split them which affects the bushes and can also allow the roll bar to move sideways and catch the subframe. Something else to check while inspecting the droplinks.

Andy as you,ve had the droplinks replaced as Spike says look at the antiroll bar bushes but go for the VW polo bushes unsure of part numbers but a quick search of the site should do the trick they work well.

Thank you very much for your advice.
I am bringing the car to my local audi dealer today
for their opion on this (which is free)and on the previous warning
lights showing; but then will try to do the work myself.
Assuming it's the anti-roll bar can it be left for a while before
I replace it, or the bushes. And is the car safe to drive in the
meantime?
Thanks

update; ARB bracket broken

update:
The garage just reported that the an ARB bracket is broken
and that they would not advise that I drive the car.
Is this true,
As I would rather try to fix this myself, are they any links that might help.

Thanks once again in advance

Andy

Cheers Spike,

Anti roll bar bracket indeed- and dangerous too!
Sounds the garage is trying to pull a fast one.
I'll check that it is the sleeve which has slipped and
order a pair of polo bushes and carry on driving.
