Wondered if any of you guys had any experience of the following:

I have a '52 Sport with Dunlop SP9090 tyres 205 40 17. 19k miles, original tyres.

Moved my car on Friday whilst at work and noticed I had a flat. Had a look at the tyre and the wall was perished most of the way around. Looked like I had run it flat, but I know I didn't as there is no damage to the rim and from having a puncture before can tell immediately. Pumped it up but could hear it leaking, so took it just around the corner to see if could be fixed. At ATS, they took off the wheel and said that it was illegal as the cords were showing thru the tyre and it was cracked and perished on both side. Both front tyres were the same although the near side was still up and correctly inflated.

Panic set in and I madly called around to see if anyone had a couple of tyres in stock on a late Friday afternoon! Guildford Tyres had two Dunlops, although found out a little later that one was damaged, they offered to put one on that evening and one on Monday when they got it in. Great! Got thru Guildfords awful traffic and at 5.40 made it to Guildford tyres.

The fitter took off the tyre and was quite suprised at the state of the tyre. He looked at the other one and advised me that it was in a dangerous state and really wouldn't be happy for me to go too much further on it as it could just fall apart! He said that it was probably due to the camber of the car putting stress on the tyres. The insde was bald, but loads of tread everywhere else. Luckily Guildford tyres had had the thought to pick up another brand that they had 2 of. They were Goodyear Eagle F1. Similar tread and I really didn't have much option as I needed the car for work the next morning.

Have kept the tyres and will try to post a few pics if I get a chance. I am booking my car into Audi to get the tracking done so will get them to check everything.

Anyone else had this? Is it the car or the tyres? And 19k acceptable for this to happen. The cracks were quite difficult to see when the tyre was inflated, so if you have these tyres I suggest that you go and check them!

"richj" posted that his Dunlop 9090s had cracked sidewalls as well. Check out his post on the "Vote for best 40 series on 17 inch wheels" thread.

Sidewalls shouldn't just crack for no apparent reason, especially when only 2 or 3 years old.

It sounds like a bad batch of Dunlops were made. I would contact Trading Standards and ask Dunlop to replace the whole set free of charge. Keep the old tyres as evidence and don't let Dunlop take them away. The first thing Dunlop might want to do, is destroy the evidence of their faulty tyres. [13]

Thanks Smartboost. I have it booked into Audi in Thursday for wheel alignment, I'll see what they say.
