Hello

My first post.

Proud owner 2004 (54) 1.6 Sport.
Owned since 2015 (@87K miles)
117K miles to date. Run on E5 (99) for last 10K.

Short History:
Full service at each MOT.
New alternator, pump and cambelt (95K)
New intake manifold (!) as Swirly flaps locked open. (105K)
New x2 Coolant Flange 1J0121087D as small end kept breaking, (suspect excess engine movement) (100K & 110K)
New heater matrix, connecting pipe, expansion tank and tubes, chasing a coolant leak. (115K)

Diagnostics:
My (ECS) engine light came on solid yellow without a change in performance:

(@116,500 miles)
17443 - Sensor for NOx (G295) Signal Implausible P1035
17428 - Fuel Pressure Regulation Control Range Exceeded P1020 - Intermittent

(Regrettably) I cleared the codes and then drove without a change in performance for another 200 miles until it came on again. Same codes, cleared again another 200 miles came on again. No change in performance. Until…

(@117,000 miles)
Infrequent minor ticking sound pulling away in first, or when accelerating at low RPM. Lost power up a hill, and the solid ECS light flashed when this happened then power resorted and ECS light back to solid. This happened a few times over a motorway journey where I eventually broke down. Stalled idling at a roundabout, ticking became more of a shuddering. Starts and idles with a slight regular uptick in RPM, keeps stalling if moved.

Codes from roadside recovery:

17443 - NOx sensor; implausible signal
17428 - Fuel pressure regulator; limit exceeded
17746 - Camshaft position sensor; open/short circuit to ground
17748 - Camshaft position sensor/engine speed sensor; incorrect correlation DTC: 16684 - Random / multiple cylinder misfire detected
16686 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
16687 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
16688 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
16395 - Camshaft timing control, bank1; Specification not achieved (over-advanced) 16712 - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

Question:

Best guess is EGR valve was stuck open i am starving the engine with too many exhaust gasses. Thoughts on this?

But what’s the likely cause of the camshaft correlation issue?
What can I expect for repairs beyond the EGR valve?

Any recommendations for how to address this appreciated!

Best,

Hal

The only "obvious" thing, to me, is that the crankshaft sensor is seeing a different engine rotation to the camshaft position sensor. (Misfires, probably a consequence of that).
Can't think of a way to check either, so change one, see hiw/if the engine runs. If no better, change the other.
My feeling is crank sensor, but the camshaft sensor is, probably, easier to get at.
Only use genuine sensors.
Mac.

I would check timing and if OK as suggested change the camshaft sensor unless presuming the engine has 2 and they are the same part and easy to get at swop them over and see if the fault goes with it. In fairness thou I am not that familiar with the petrol engines
