EGR valve differences? 1.4 petrol AUA

Hello,

I believe there are two versions of an EGR valve for the 1.4 petrol engines and was wondering if anyone knew if they were interchangeable? I've put images of both down below, I'm fairly sure my car should have the top version originally, but it currently has the second version fitted. There have been no issues so far but was wondering if these were a known interchangeable item or if there was a specific reason to have to get the other model?

I would have thought this would have been discussed before, I did search but struggled to find the answer - perhaps i'm not so good at searching?!

Thanks!

Hi,

I looked up your car data in the profile section and the model you have listed is a TDI.

Have you got an petrol engine code for the EGR valves you are researching?

Kind regards

Assuming the query is about 1.4 AUA petrol engine EGRs as suggested by the title and the question, the parts diagram

suggests that there are two versions applicable for 1.4i (AUA / BBY) ; the former up to a specific build (chassis) number, and the latter following a switchover at a cited chassis number (which doesn't necessarily correlate with switchover between engine models - we've encountered grey areas on this here previously). There don't appear to be huge differences between them apart from a slightly larger diameter to the small air pipe that usually terminates in a small air filter (some kind of pressure equalisation duct?) that is probably of no import.

the images are apparently a Pierburg EGR on one hand and a slightly different style on the other but the connectors and end casting appear similar. As far as I'm aware Pierburg are one of the gold-standard equipment manufacturers for this sort of component, which is why I ended up buying a no-name EGR for 30-odd quid off Amazon (that looks like the second image) 4 years ago as I couldn't afford the Pierburg (around £150 at the time). I was extremely lucky that this worked, and so far, has lasted. A lot better than the failed original.

Looking for images, there are versions of the Pierburg with the same part number but a plastic body like your second image, as well as with different (non-triangular metal casting at the EGR connector pipe end) casing that would be incompatible. The most important things appear to be the correct connector for the electrical component, and the correct interface for the EGR pipe going to the throttle body.

As there are no error codes I would just chalk this up as something that may have been replaced during the tenure of a previous owner and crack on with fixing actual faults if there are any.

Hi all, thanks for the replies, I own both a TDI and a Petrol AUA. This is on the petrol AUA as the title mentions, sorry for not making it clearer.

To provide a bit of background when I got the car it had EGR issues brining on the engine light - excessive flow from memory. I noticed there was also flow (vacuum) coming from the little breather pipe attached to the EGR so I assumed the EGR was shot. At this point the The only replacement I had on hand was the second design so I fitted and adapted this. It was at this point I noticed I was missing the rubber gasket to the inlet manifold from EGR pipe, so i fitted this too. I haven't had any issues with the new EGR valve so far but was just trying to see if it was known as a working alternative or whether it was a definite no go.

The images are of Pierburg EGR valves but the original Audi ones come in two designs, each one splitting images of those Pierburg ones, it was just easier to get images off Autodoc of the two designs. Incidentally these can be had from Autodoc for less than £90 if ou wait for the right day. Combine with a few other parts and you can get free postage!

Sounds like it's not a definitively known thing if it is a perfectly acceptable replacement or not. I suppose if no warning light is raised by the car and no relevant faults are found it should be working fine. Just keep it in mind should anything further EGR related come up in the future

that would be my take on it.
