electric shock

its getting more and more often that i am gettin a small electric shock from my car wen i close the door or sumtimes close the boot has anyone els had this problem? any one no wot is causing it?

(this is not a hoax-video, it can really happen)
 
The best thing to do is keep a hold of the car door when you're getting out of the car so that you alreayd have a route to ground when your feet touch the floor - that should prevent the static buildup caused by your clothes rubbing against the car fabric from discharging when you earth yourself.
 
its geting worse! every time i get out the car now and it hurts! iv tried holding the door it still gets me??????????????????
 
Hi Scott,

You can buy earthing straps that hang down from the car's exhaust or chassis to contact the ground. I was always pretty sceptical about them because I always thought it was the driver (not the car body) that is carrying the static charge built up from moving on the seat fabric. This is earthed when they touch the car metal. However it might be something on the car is creating a charge and earthing back through you if the shock is as bad as you say in which case an earthing strap might reduce the problem (but I can't think what would cause it). Helicopters have to be earthed when they land because the rotating parts can build up a big static charge.

I can't swear for their affectiveness but for £3 a pop it might be worth a try to see if it improves things.

Have you tried holding a metal part of the door while you step out of the car ?

it stoped giving me a shock for about a week:), when today i got two:mad: so i have tried holding a metal part of the door as i get out and think that is helping, so thanks for that advise. i will be getting an earth strap asap to. i look silly trying to close the door as im scared of touching it and i look like im feeling to see if the door is boiling hot! not that that will stop me getting a shock:D
 
What are you wearing - some types of synthetic fabric pick up static more easily with friction than others - also what shoes are you wearing - wearing trainers can make it worse too.
 
t-shirt jogging bottems and trainers today. but still happens when i wear jeans and a coat or jumper. could it be a dodgy earth on the car or maybe phono leads touching the chassie? i just rememberd i tucked them down the side when i removed the sub and amp but cant remember if i taped them up, and ther still connected to the sterio
 
Nominal 12V is not enough to produce the shocks you experience. It must be a static discharge, or a faulty capacitor, that's if you have onee for your sound sistem.
If not, chillax, it's normal, it happens to me too, every other day.
 
It's nothing to do with the electrics. You're charging yourself as your clothing and shoes rub on, and separate from, the seating and floor material. Hold on to a metal part of the car as you get out, or if that's awkward, discharge yourself by touching the middle of the window glass with the tip of a knuckle. It shouldn't leave any marks and there should be enough of a tracking path through contamination on the glass to bleed away any charge, but the resistance shouldn't be low enough to cause a shock.
