Emission control warning light....

.....on the dashboard lit up about a week ago. At around the same time I noticed a strange judder when switching the ignition off. Rather like turning off an automatic when it's still in gear. Mine's a 1.4 TDi by the way. My local garage reckons it's a failed re circulating pump in the engine that's failed. To replace would be £350 plus labour - but it wont harm the engine if I'm prepared to live with the judder and warning light being on all the time
Has anyone had experience of this - or offer any advice? I'm not keen to leave it the way it is - but £400 plus sounds very lumpy!

I seem to remember something about the exhaust gas recirculation valve has an anti-shudder mechanism in it which is designed to prevent shut-off shudder as you're experiencing. Perhaps it's something to do with that?
Have you got access to diagnostic software like VAGCOM -would be useful to get the error codes as I'm sure the ECU will have some logged if there's a warning light on the dash?

But as Mike says, as from next year with the new changes in the MOT, a persistent warning light like this will cause an MOT test failure...

Thanks guys. Having done a more thorough search on this forum, I reckon it must be the intake manifold air control actuator (whatever that is)
Anyway, regardless of MOT rules etc I'd prefer to get it fixed and be done with it. If I ever came to sell, a constant warning light and switch-off judder certainly wouldn't be considered 'added value'

As Dan suggests, there is a vacuum operated "flap" in the inlet tract incorporated in the EGR valve assembly.
It could be that this flap is stuck in an open position or that the actuating mechanism is seized or broken or it could be that the vacuum hose has dislodged.
In any event, this would cause the engine to shudder on switch off. I (and other members) had a similar issue when the EGR was by-passed - I modified the EGR housing and re-fitted the unit for peace of mind. Note however that later model TDi's have an electronically activated EGR valve. In either case not difficult to get to to repair or replace - best if you did a scan to identify the fault through a fault code.
