Hi Folks,

I have a 1.6 FSI which I've been running for about 18 months now. It seems to be developing a problem but the deadlers are not being very helpful!

Sometimes when I start the engine when it has either cold or it has been standing for a few hours there is a knocking sound (sounds a bit like a diesel!) for a few seconds [16].

It sounds like it is taking a while for the oil to get around the engine. I think its not normal as it doesn't do it EVERY time and I've never heard that kind of noise from any other car I've had.

I mentioned it to the dealer prior to the last service but they said they couldn't reproduce it (they ALWAYS say that!) and it was probably don to lo oil. However, it did it a couple of days after the service (when the oil level was as set by the dealer!) and I've always been very careful to maintain the correct oil level (although it seems to be rather difficult to read the oil level on the dipstick!)

Any thoughts?

Here's a few suggestions, not based upon any personal experience, but worth a try anyway:

- Check the oil pump, it may take longer than normal to get the pressure up.
- You said the oil level is not too low, but also is it too high?
- I don't know about the FSI engine, but if it has an timing chain maybe the tensioner needs adjusting?
- If the mileage is high and/or the engine is badly worn due to high revs the tappets may be worn?

Otherwise I'd suggest being with the mechanics when they start the engine. Sometimes what is an unusual noise to the owner is a normal noise to the mechanic.

my 1.6fsi has always done this... it hasnt ever bothered me, i think its normal :)

Mine too... you've got me worried now [B)]

It happens only from cold and lasts for, at most, ten seconds or so - resulting in everyone assuming that it is indeed a diesel.

...and don't get me started on that dipstick :( (not you, Will [8D]).

The FSI system works like a diesel (I think) so I would expect this noise......or would I.....mmmmm

Ours has always done this, normally only for about two seconds.

Worse when its cold and/or been left for a while.
