Engine number mystery (1.4 petrol)

Hi,
I've tried many searches but can't find the info I need, so I hope someone can help.

I recently bought my first A2, and of course, am now finding the things I should have when I first viewed it!

The main question is related to the engine - and specifically its provenance. I believe it is the original, and I would like to confirm that by an engine number check.

I read in a post from Spike (posted many years ago!) -
The engine number is located on the front engine/gearbox flange.
This info was taken from Audi literature which I haven't checked myself.

However I can't see it, and as there is a bit of corrosion on the block I'm not really sure exactly where it should be. I can see the casting number easily enough.

Can anyone give detailed info/ photo of where and what I am looking for please? As well as how visible it should be!

The engine is an AUA, (1.4 petrol) it has the fittings for the remote dipstick ( as well as the blanked additional one), and it all looks fine. Being able to confirm the engine number would be a great help.

Hi, welcome to the club. If you got the second dipstick tunnel, that's the earlier 1999-2001 edition, just like on mine, that feature is a blessing though.
If I may ask, why do you need the engine number for? Checking your details shows very low mileage on that engine, that's good news usually, with such low milage unlikely that's been changed, unless there might be a reason for it? In the other hand, you probably need to look into when the timing belt, drive belt were changed. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. I took the car to a recognised A2 expert garage who pointed out some of the auxiliary parts to be unusual, and possibly of Polo origin. (specifically expansion tank and radiator set up). They could however see no sign of repaired accident damage of any kind.
The last keeper had the car for over 20 years and made no mention of any work which might have warranted an engine change or similar. The garage also pointed out it was burning a bit of oil on start up, but given the mileage I'm not sure it's a wear issue, as it's certainly not noticeable now after giving the car a few long runs.
Anyhow, I'm looking to have the cam belts / idlers etc changed, and I want to be sure I get the correct parts. I could compare part numbers etc, but finding the engine number would give a definitive answer to this.
By the way I have now 'activated' the second dipstick using advice gleaned from this site!

If you really need it, this is where the engine no. is:

Many thanks Steve_c - I've been poring over the engine casing and completely failed to notice the sticker right in front of me..
Well the numbers do match so now I need to compare with a bog standard 1.4 petrol and see what the differences actually are!

Power unit > 4-cylinder petrol injection engine (1.4 ltr.), mechanics > Technical data > Engine number

Engine number
t The engine number („engine code“ and „serial number“) can be found on the cylinder block above the gearbox beneath the thermostat housing.
t Additionally there is a sticker on the toothed belt cover showing the „engine code“ and „serial number“-arrow-.
t The engine code is also to be found on the vehicle data sticker.

That's not really surprising, as the A2 1.4 petrol AUA engine is literally a 1.4 Polo AUA engine. Still worth checking the possible issues of course.

Polo parts are certainly not unknown in A2s, and may in fact be the only new parts that are still available from VAG.

Why on earth didn't you ask the "recognised A2 expert garage" to fit a new cam belt and water pump while they were about it?

Don't worry too much about it, I recommend to phone around, tell them it has the same engine as the 1.4 Polo aua, that can help a lot if they hesitate, and ask for quotes on changing the timing-, drive belts and water pump, these usually get done at once. Even if that garage knew about the Polo parts used in A2, they might tried to make you pay more to "fix" the issue.
Don't lose faith just yet, once the belts sorted a big part is done, and with such a low mileage car you might have no more issues for years. Let us know how it goes.
