Engine problems with my A2 1.4 se SPORT

Hi all!! I've recently inherited an Audi A2 1.4 se SPORT but with a difference, the engine keeps popping and banging and does not rev or run very well. Apart from going to my local Audi dealer does anybody know of anyone who specialises in A2's mechanically around the hampshire area, or also what it could be?

it's the same engine as the polo and lupo 1.4 so any vw specialist should be able to help. other stuff will have to be either dealer or audi specialist.
