Hi all, i run a 2002 1.4 sport a2 and have experianced a couple of problems. i have owned the car for 8 wks now and on 2 occasions i am driving along and the revs die and i loose all power the engine then picks up again and i carry on my journey. Has any one else had this problem and if so what did there dealer diagnose it as. If you could let me know then when i call my dealer i can give them some tips.

I've experienced something similar when the engine is cold. Driving along in 1st or 2nd, at 2000rpm it cuts out and seems to lose pull, but then it picks up again. As you carry on and warm the engine up the problem seems to go away. I havn't been to see Audi about it since it doesn't really bother me that much but your example sounds more serious and it may well be the ECU is losing it's marbles.

Oh, and mine's a (Y)2001 A2 SE with 20,000m

first time mine happened was on the motorway, engine warm been running for 45 mins. The second was around town but dangerous as i was pulling out onto a roundabout at rush hour. You can imagine the potential of no power busy roundabout, trying to pull onto it quickly

Its easy to replicate, if you accidentally (Size 11 shoes) depress the break while <s>flooring it</s>gently accelerate you get a noticeable (especially when a big truck is coming towards you) delay in acceleration.

Mine's a (02) A2 SE 1.4 tdi with just under 28,000m and next(1st) service due in 4300 and counting.

Freudian slip me thinks-break (which you would suffer if said lorry hits you) instead of brake....

naty-do any warning lights blink? Does the engine just loose power as if you had taken your foot off the gas? I wonder if it's a fuel blockage?

Was the road wet? (water getting into electics somewhere?).

Good luck if you take it to a dealer-the usual "we have taken it for a 200 miles test drive and it never did it once, so you must have imagined it" statement will come out!!!

I`ve had it a couple of times in mty TDI but in my case it feels like the turbo has stalled and the car is relying on atmospheric pressure to run. But both times turning it off & on again has rectfied the problem both mine have been on a cold engine.

Perhaps it is an ECU Failsafe as the more i think of it i was attempting heavier accleration than i would wish on a cold engine.

Since it is only an intermittent fault (twice in 14,000 miles) i have not troubled myself with the dealer scenario.

I can do it on command (hot/cold/wet/dry) just use some heel (on brake) and toe (on gas), its probably a "Safety Feature" built into the fly by wire computer to stop you damaging something.

I just keep my foot on the gas and after about 1 second the engine kicks in.

Hello
i have noticed something with the engine on my 1.4 tdi and that is when the engine is cold th turbo does not kick as quick as when the engine is warm this is a definate fail safe so as the engine is not over revd when cold.
Seems to do this just when you go to pull away after just starting the engine.
but it never losses revs just must be a calculated delay when cold to avoid any stresses being put on the engine when cold.

cheers

Thats just how it started with our TDi. Don't know if it's the same problem but it got worse and worse and in the end, with anything over medium throttle, the turbo always cut out - and turning the ignition on and off always cured it!

Took it in to the dealers who initially replaced the DV valve - without curing the problem. They then found that where a hose was clipped to a pipe, there was a slight leak which was somehow detected by the ECU which then shut the turbo down????

Anyway, 2000 miles later have had no problems at all.

Can't say if your problem is the same as it has only happenned a couple of times.
