I have just bought a 1.6 fsi. When i start the engine it rattles for a second or two the its ok . Can someone tell me if this is normal

Very normal, nothing to worry about mine does it every time. If you do a search there are a few posts about the rattle!

Yep it's normal - concerning at first but normal apparently as long as it settles into normal idle noise after a couple of secs

Yeah, mine rattles aswell. Audi have replaced the head and now the oil pump and its still exactly the same.
I cringe every time I fire the engine up.
Spoils an otherwise superb car.
Can't quite believe how a prestige company like Audi can put an engine into production with such an obvious design fault!
It's a problem only with the 1.6fsi, my first A2 was a 1.4 and that was fine.
I wonder if there are any 1.6fsi out there that don't rattle?

Rattles

My 1.6FSI rattles at start up.
I checked the oil and topped it up the other day and it rattled a lot less. So, I think the more it rattles, the closer you may be to a top up.

My wifes 1.6FSI rattles as described - I really would like to know whats causing it - just for my interest. Since it doesn't do it from cold every time I don't think it is oil related. Could it be some kind of pre ignition due to the injection system - I honestly can't believe it is oil starvation or surely the top end would wear prematurely causing warranty claims galore.

Anyone know what the rattle is????

Skipton 01, You must, with your depth of knowledge know what this rattle is?

Or has it beaten the forum - first time i've known this!!!

Cheers

Like everybody elses 1,6fsi mine rattles too. I think it is the pump charging up the pressure for the common rail petrol injection system. Could be wrong though.

Having only driven the FSI a couple of times, I am not sufficiently familiar with the rattle (although I certainly remember it) to diagnose what is causing it.

Audi say that it is indicative of the engine and that it it is not a fault, merely a characteristic of FSI technology. As the earliest engines are now approaching 6-8 years of age there does not seem to be a reliability issue with them, so we can only presume that Audi are right in this case and that the rattles are nothing to worry about, as long as they soon disappear after the engine is warm.

Cheers,

Mike

rattle on fsi

its the HYDRULIC LIFTERS .AS A ENGINE SITS FOR A LONG TIME THEY DRAIN DOWN .IN LAYMENS TERMS get a beaker or cup place a disc in the top of the cup ..presto a valve lifter between the top of the disc and the inside of the cup ..there sould be a cushion of oil ..no oil equals a rattle as the two faces meet .as oil is pumped around on start up the space is filled , the rattle goes....nothing to worry about ..just dont floor it on start up :D
