Engine revving on startup

Hi folks,

I wonder if I can ask for your help with a recurrent - albeit sporadic - engine issue. About twice a month when I start my TDi 75 the engine revs quite high before settling back to idle after a few seconds. After these episodes, which don't usually occur when its first started in the morning but rather after its already been driven that day, the emissions control system fault light illuminates on the dash board for a day or so before going off. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Is anyone in the Sheffield area who could help with a scan?

In what might be an unrelated note, I have also noticed recently that when the car is going down a hill in a low gear, there is now a whining noise which sounds similar to the engine note but is slightly higher pitched. Probably way too little to go on but that the best I can describe it for now...any thoughts?

Thanks as always for any assistance you can offer.

Have you scanned the car for fault codes using VCDS or know someone that can?

My mates Arosa does this... he seems to think it could be a leaking/sticky injector

Thanks very much for your response Tuffty.

I haven't had the car scanned as yet. Are there any members located in Sheffield or South Yorkshire who might be willing to help with this? It would be much appreciated.

Hi folks

Just to update my previous post, I have finally had the car scanned and it turns out that the dual temp sender was faulty. This has now been replaced and the emissions control light is no more. However, the car is still (albeit very infrequently) revving on start up as described above, even if the emissions control light no longer accompanies this.

I've had a chat with my local garage and they are suggesting that I should try filling the car up with the high end BP/Shell diesel and taking it on a long run (150 miles plus) to ensure that the engine gets up to temperature properly, which in conjunction with the additives in the fuel, should eliminate any build up of carbon deposits in the engine which they think might be causing this. They are of the opinion that cheap fuels and short journeys (both of which are the staple of my A2) where the engine doesn't get up to temp can cause symptoms like this. Does this make sense? Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Thanks as always.

Ben

Diesels aren't good with only short trips (it takes a long while to warm up properly). However I've personally not encountered that symptom (but neither do I do short trips in mine).
