The following problem only occurs when the car is cold, when I start the car up and turn the steering wheel an awful high pitched squeal comes from the engine, am I right in assuming this is the timing belt slipping or am I way off track ?

Looks like another trip back to the garage anyway:(

It sounds like the pulley belt for the power steering pump slipping when you put it under load by turning the wheel. If it was the timing belt you wouldn't have an engine!!! Was the weather damp when it did it? A note, I notice in the manual it states that you shouldn't hold the steering on full lock for more than 15 seconds, otherwise you will damage the pump. I damaged the power steering pump on my Saab, £550 for the pump then it had to be fitted etc.

yes, its been raining every time its done it, its funny you should mention the power steering pump as ive had a few problems with that already. Thanks for the info :)

My A2 was always garaged (20/22 hours in every 24), but every time that the car got left in the rain overnight then I always got a screeching noise when starting up. The fault was said to be the alternator belt, but after replacing it the problem still existed now and again.

I can't comment for the A2, but on the Saab the pulley belt was flat as were all the pulley wheels and it would occasionally squeal when damp. I wonder if it would do the same if the belt was a V profile, more surface area to grip with?

I think that because ive already had problems with the power steering pump, ill get it booked in to get it checked out, and if it is as john says only a problem that occurs when its damp, ill just leave it be.

Multi v belts, the ribbed design are actually nore efficient as the surface area of the 'contact patch' is acually larger.

The power steering pump is driven electrically, so it does not have a belt which could slip.

Same with my old A2-when left in the wet or just been washed, the thing squeeled on start up for a few seconds then the noise died away.

runboy - was your fault diagnosed and fixed or did you just leave it be?

I just left it-only happened now and again and didn't last mre than a couple of seconds.

Plus I couldn't face another trip to the dealer!.

Mine never does this and it rains a lot ! But I suspect it are the belts that are squeeling.
