Engine under tray

My engine under tray is hanging on by a single clip, and is very frayed at the edges. What do I do? Pull it off and drive without it? Spend over £450 at a main dealer as I've been quoted? There was post on here a few years ago that said you could get a genuine part very cheap from Germany, but that link is dead now. I've only had an A2 in my life for a few weeks so need to learn, and fast!!

I think the under trays are obsolete now, ran out a few weeks back. Place a wanted add on market place they are under £100 for sure, even from audi. Try @CreweAudi

In the mean time get some clips and secure it to the car. Last thing you want is it to fly off the car and cause damage or worse to someone else.
P.S. If that was a main dealer quoting you that price then never enter their premises again.

Here is an ebay listing for one all be it without fixings... Be quick only one left.

If this one sells there are others.

P.S. Talk to some of our breakers as they may have a used one but can most certainly help you out with the fasteners for it.

Yes the trays for both diesel and petrol are now NLA. Remaining Audi stock in the supply chain is dwindling very fast, only 3 left last week, I think you are too late but ask. There are other aftermarket manufacturers but I hear they are thin and flimsy and not worth buying.

As to your other points.

The Audi price a few weeks ago was £59.97, it is only a bit of plastic, the £450 was a massive rip-off or a misunderstanding - maybe oil sump but I would be surprised to find still available, anyway always quote your model and year in a post that involves parts or model dependent other things, it just makes it easier for the person trying to help and avoids assumptions and guessing and easier. (I'm just as guilty as charged).

Yes you can safely do without the tray but it reputedly gives a little sound insulation from the engine noise and helps prevent leaks from staining your parking area to some extent, and I hear it is an integral part of front bumper support.

I cannot believe it is hanging on by one fixing, probably held by a fixing in each upstand into the chassis. I would remove, inspect and repair if possible and if repairable buy a aftermarket fixing kit set, £15ish for the million and one fixings. Having said that I believe a few are not available but Paul(Depronman)on here, offers a 3-d printed substitute.

If not repairable buy a low cost used one from one of the recyclers on here when available (well worth joining our Marketplace), but they will not post (item to big and liable to be damaged in shipping) and you must collect, either from North or South Wales or Is near Brighton?(Ami).

Welcome by the way.

Andy

Edit. Me and audifan typing at same time again!

Thanks so much CrispyEdd audifan and Andrew! Thanks for the welcome and the generous advice. Seeing you all posting in the early hours makes me think I've joined my kind of club.

Apologies that I didn't include the details of my car - I thought I had, but anyway....it's a 2005 A2 TDI 1390cc and it's red.
I'll pursue a replacement on eBay, thanks!

You are welcome.

BTW Either Audi or the DVLA made mistakes with the engine size on the V5 log book. The 1.4 tdi is 1442cc. The 1390cc is the petrol 1.4 engine.

So your car has the BHC 1.4 tdi engine in it.

The tdi 90 has a red i on the badge, also has rear disc brakes. The 75 rear badge is all chrome and has drum rear brakes. There are other differences but much harder to spot.

The AMF and BHC are both 75 and the ATL is the 90.

Never be afraid to ask questions, the collective knowledge base here is second to none.

A few things I strongly recommend...

Have at least 2 fully working keys.

Get an owners manual if you do not already.

These 2 are for making repairs easier. A multimeter to test electrics and diagnostic scanning tool. Neither essential and if you can borrow or have someone able to do them so much the better.

Where on Devon are you Jan? I’m near Honiton / Axminster myself and once I find my scan cable could help you scan the car for faults if needed

Hello.
What are the items numbered 5 described as please, as these are not commom fittings that I've seen before?
I did ask for these at Maidstone AUDI 2 years ago, and this threw up the problem of my VIN not being recognised.
I've mentioned this VIN subject on here before; believing it might be because the car was registered in Germany in early 2001,
before coming to Britain on 5/3/2001.

Details of the fixing components including item 5, speed nut can be found here.

Thank you. I have looked at the parts diagram before.
Speed nut is quite a general term.
No.5 is different from any I've seen; which is why I went to AUDI for it. No luck due to my VIN problem.

No 5 are captive sprung inserts that locate into subframe

Thank you. I found them at Autodoc. They are an unusual fixing, which is only described as a speed nut on the parts diagram.
At least one of mine is missing, and I improvised on the other.
