Engine Undertray - or lack of .......

Pretty sure when I looked it up the other day my car had a code on the option sticker in the service book which was 'supplied without engine undertray'. Indeed it does not have one although there are a couple of fixings in the trailing edge of the front bumper to which I guess the undertray attaches.
Was this common on the early cars that they had no undertray?

I've never heard of this before. I thought all A2,s came with some form of engine undertray but happy to be proved wrong.

Well I was looking at code 1SA which according to other info on here says 'without engine protection'.
Whereas 1SB is 'engine under protection'.
It is a long time since I bought a car without an engine undertray - though I owned plenty without back in the day. (Tracing oil leaks was much easier!!!)

Ok - in which case mine has just gone 'awol' at some point in the past 18 years.
Something else to add to the list!
Thanks for the clarification.

Just out of interest....does it need an undertray?
Ours was beyond repair according to the garage so is without one now and several members have a spare ones available which is great.
But do I need one?
Are they there to reduce road noise or protect engine?
Will I notice anything if I dont replace.....will it cause issues in the future?

Happy to be 'put in my place' on this btw :)

yes, it needs an undertray to keep the front bumper and wheel arch liners in place.

The original should be around €40 or so now, so I don't see the point in not going OEM.

I took my storm tdi to a local garage to have its lower boost pipe refitted after it popped off. On inspecting the car the mechanic said “wow it still has the under tray- we don’t normally refit them as it’s only to keep the engine clean.” I said “ well this is going back on as it holds the bumper and inner arches in place.!” He still gave up and gave me a few fixing as he could not refit them. Hardly a good attitude.

The engine undertray does a number of things.
Having it improves the car's aerodynamics by reducing drag and so improves fuel efficiency.
It protects the engine, transmission and steering components from road spray and corrosion so prolongs life.
The diesel models have sound insulation on the tray to make the engine quieter.
The leading edge of the tray's fixings hold both the bumper and the tray in place so if there is no tray, the bumper edge will hang down and can get caught when reversing.

From memory there is about another 10 euros shipping, but 38 and 49 euros for petrol & diesel originals respectively.

Well I think that settles it.....will source a new one ? might be next month as its just had some more work done (2x new coolant pipes) so after £1000 (big service and belt etc) within a month my card needs a rest ?

Hi all. This is a very useful thread.
I've noticed the front lower bumper has split. Is it separate from the colour coded bumper? If so, where can I source one and are they easy to self fit?

Cheers in advance.

No, I'm afraid it is all one piece. - Andy
