Engine Undertray - or lack of .......

eBay is an option but can be expensive and as to condition any A2 is at least 14 years, or a bit more, and it likely any that come on the market will have imperfections to some degree. A better option than eBay is the Marketplace on here but as said they will be used but at least not broken, depends what level of condition is acceptable to you.

You have several options.

1. Repair the one you have (the colour will match!), fibre glass repair, fill and spray black part. Tucked away low down it should be indistinguishable and if the rest of the bumper is in good nick worth doing. I wonder if the crack is down to lack of engine undertray? (that is needed to support the bumper)

2. Buy a replacement.
(a) same colour and acceptable condition. You have not said what colour, nor is it contained in your registration details (not updated). Put an ad in the Wanted section of Marketplace.
(b) different colour and respray, but difficult to get a match with the rest of the car.

In both cases shipping is difficult and not cheap with such a large size and collection may be uneconomic if not local.

Lastly, you ask if removal an easy job. Read this from yesterday.

Hi Andy,

Appreciate the info.
The undertray is present and also has a slight split. The whole thing has been bodged along the way somewhere. Quite sad to see:(
It’s a silver AUDI A2. Registration A2FUW

I’ll definitely put an advert in the wanted section.

Cheers

More than likely Silver Sea (or other names), LY7W, (check) which is good as they are by far the commonest.

I added another sentence to my last post about removal.

My under tray problem was caused by a scary event, yesterday (22 May) I was driving in heavy rain to a hospital appointment in Shrewsbury. In a very heavy downpour my wipers just stopped working, Barely able to see, I mounted the first drop in the kerb I saw to reduce my heart rate, the crunch I heard sounded ominous, .in a break in the rain I saw chunks of black plastic on the ground and hanging underneath, this i believe is the remnants of my under tray. I have been reading this thread and I need a replacement, my mechanical qualifications involve a phone call and a pathetic cry for help, as I am physically unable to crawl under my car to check or fix it, can anyone advise me if I can still safely drive with the the broken tray, (I have two appointments and a minor operation next week), and where to get a replacement ( the German site is out of stock). I hope I am not pushing my luck here, you guys have been a great help with another problem I had. A gentle turn and a push in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Pete

I just bought a new one from TPS for under £50. Pop to a friendly local garage and ask them to fit and check for any other damage underneath.

I bought mine from oemvwshop.com in Bratislava, CZ. Arrived in 10 working days (assuming they still have stock now)

In theory Yes, depends on the damage; if there are bits hanging down/off there could be a problem but it is fixed in 10 or so positions, so it should be reasonably secure

Ask whoever does the maintenance on your car to order a replacement undertray and some spare fixings, but take the car to them first to check the underside ( that will give them a better idea as to what extra fixings will be needed) and also to check the condition of the diesel fuel filter heat shield. Strongly recommend for a diesel that both are fitted. Also remember that if your car has a Webasto heater then the exhaust pipe has to be disconnected from the old undertray and fitted onto the new one.

@Motoman
What caused the wiper to fail? Did you fix it?
Mac.

Reference the wiper failure. My guess is the water in the wiring plug made the earth contact fail. Either the external earth lead needed for the motor or the cleaning up of the rusty contacts or both!!

Thank you all, I will be taking my car to a garage tomorrow ( it’s raining). I will have it checked over and get them to phone TPS to check if they have another under tray in stock. I am annoyed at myself, I have spent a ot of time cleaning and polishing The bodywork, new mats, restoring headlamp glass and general tidying up, finding myself suddenly blinded by pouring rain and dead wipers, I had to get away from busy traffic. The drop kerb I could barely see was my only option, the high kerb beyond it was one of the Oh @#£&%=#£ moments.

We still want to know are your wipers working now or not? Try a jump lead between the wiper motor and engine block, if it works then its a bad earth. You have checked the fuse?

I am unable to get at the engine block, I won’t bother you with my health problems but I do have a good mechanic who can fix it for me. It is racing here so I will see him tomorrow, he can also fit a new under tray when i

OK update us when the mechanic has had a look. If the wipers are still not working you could tell him about the jump lead test or to check the fuse.. Obvious I know, but as the cars are quite scarce he/she may never have worked on one before.

There has been a delay in getting my car sorted, I had an operation to remove a Carcinoma from my forehead. The result is a lot of stitches and staying at home to avoid infection, not to mention a huge black eye and Poor vision due to my eye lids almost glued together due to the surgery . I am booked in for next Friday so should be able to report some success with the wipers and service flap locking next week.

There is a moral to some of the above. Avoid "the local garage". It is well worth finding somebody who knows and like these eccentric and special little cars!

The good news is I have a new under tray fitted, TPS in Wolverhampton supplied it and Jack at my garage fitted it. He also fitted the very shiny front flap that Ian supplied and the locking cable from Steve not to forget the man with the magic printer who used ancient wizardry to produce the locking pin.
my big problem is my wipers, I took the car to my garage and explained the possible cause was the fuse or earth and the tips I was given. Nothing worked which leaves me in a mess, I have a very sick brother I need to visit but a 230 mile drive from Bridgnorth to Canvey Island without wiper would be stupid even by my standards. I would be willing to drive anywhere to get it fixed, any advice would be very welcome. Jack advised me to contact the club as you will have more knowledge than him.
