Engine undertray swapping

So, the diesel undertray is identical in shape and size to the petrol one EXCEPT that it has additional sound deadening - is that correct?

I presume the sound deafening is the little cubes on the inner face.

Petrol undertray are considerably more commonly seen due to the larger number of cars being sadly broken.

1 has anyone swapped from diesel tray to petrol? I can’t imagine it could help reduce noise that much

2. Can’t I just cut and transplant?

Thought and criticism for ignorance welcome!

Ps. Mine is badly split due to a previous owner who appeared to like driving onto kerbs. I’ve epoxied, added stainless reinforcers and fibre glass matting etc but the shape is always going to be damaged and it’s a little sad looking.

I seem to remember that the diesel undertray has a hole where the exhaust from the Webasto heater is bolted in place. I imagine that it would be possible, as I think you're suggesting, to glue the section with the sound deadening 'lumps' from your existing undertray to the topside of a petrol undertray, giving even better sound absorption, and then cut out the exhaust outlet with its associated bolt holes. Good luck if you decide to have a go.

I think the petrol ones have a cut out in them for the webasto as well. Don't rely on me 100% because I have a memory like a goldfish :)

Either way you can definitely fit a petrol one to a diesel (even if you need to make a cut-out) and the rubber nobbly bits on the TDI one come off as a sheet.

That’s reassuring - no one called me a numpty!

Now, anyone got an undertray going?
