Excessive smoke on starting.

Hi , can anyone help I recently purchased a A2 1.4 tdi 75 121,000 miles car is immaculate but suffers from loads of smoke on starting and lasts until engine warms up. Puffs a little when running after its warmed up. Runs ok once running but very lumpy at starting for a couple of mins. Smoke is hard to diagnose its white in colour maybe a bit blue ish but smells of I think diesel not sure if it's oil. Having not driven a newer A2 with less miles think it's a bit sluggish too.

Hi

It might be an injector problem.

If you can't get it to one of the A2 experts on here then at the very least give it a good dose of diesel injector cleaner and see if that effects it at all.

But it needs investigating.

Thanks Birchall< can you recommend any brand of cleaner. I have been told numerous diagnostics from different people but though some one on here may have the answer. Cheers

It could be the injector wiring harness/loom starting to die - they don't like the cold starts, but once warmed up they work a bit better and symptoms disappear. It's a common fault with the TDi.
Absolutely essential you get the engine scanned for fault codes as a priority. In the meantime, as Birchall says, a dose of injector cleaner won't do any harm - they're all much of a muchness to be honest.
