Fault codes - P0106 & P0571

Hi guys,

Having some issues with my A2 1.4 petrol at the moment and looking for some advice.

The engine management and Epc warning lights are intermitently coming on.
They go back off again but can return anything from back on the same day to staying off for over a week (around 300 miles later).

I have had a scan done and been given the following fault codes-

P0106 and P0571.

Ive done a little research and found these codes relate to the map sensor and the brake light switch.

However i am not experiencing any symptons at all. The car is driving fine. I do not have an erratic idle and my brake lights are working fine.

I am a little confused and my limited knowleedge is not helping.

Any help or suggestions on how to proceed with this porblem would be greatly appreciated.

Thnak you

16490/P0106/000262 - Manifold / Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71) / (F96): Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms
Erratic Idle
Possible Causes
Wiring and/or Connections from/to Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96) faulty
Leak in Air Intake and/or Exhaust
Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96) faulty
Engine Control Module faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Engine Control Module Software Version
See Special Notes for Details
Check Timing
See Special Notes for Details
Check Wiring and/or Connections from/to Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96)
Check for Leak in Air Intake and/or Exhaust
Check/Replace Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96)
Check/Replace Engine Controle Module
Special Notes
On certain smaller Engines we've seen cases where a buggy Engine Control Unit Firmware can cause these fault codes, additionally there are known Problems with the Timing Chain Tensioners which can also result in these fault codes. Please refer to the related TPL/TSB for more instructions.

16955/P0571/001393 - Brake Light Switch (F): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active
Brake Light(s) not working
Possible Causes
Wiring and/or Connectors faulty
Fuse(s) faulty
Wrong Brake Light Bulb installed (21W instead of 5/21W)
Brake Light Bulb(s) faulty
Brake Light Switch (F) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Wiring or Connectors
Check/Replace Fuse(s)
Check/Replace Brake Light Bulb(s)
Check/Replace Brake Switch (F)
Special Notes
Brake Light Switches (F) have the reputation of breaking quite often.

Hi Terry

I had this problem, the car failed its MOT because of the EPC light not going off when starting the car. It was the brake switch, £15.00 fix,

Live in hope

Dave

Hi,
Check if you have the stop lights functional.
I had a similar problem with a VW Polo, and it was the brake light switch, and the stop lights did not work.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Very imformative post John-wingnut, thank you.

The brake lights are working fine 100% of the time and the warning lights can occur whilst driving along without brake pedal being touched.

I have had the brake light switch changed in the past as a result of having no brake lights at all.

Is it possible that this code is still stored from the previous fault some 18 months ago?

Am i wrong in asuming that if i had any of the faults below they would not be intermitant thus causing the warning lights to be illuminated constantly?

Leak in Air Intake and/or Exhaust
Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96) faulty
Engine Control Module faulty

Would it be a recommended course of action to replace the map sensor and brake light switch at this point?

I hope you understand my reluctance to do without you guys advice as i dont seem to be experiencing the main symptons of these sensor failures (erratic idle and no brake lights) and as i said i have limited knowledge.

All help/ comments appreciated and gratefuly recieved.
Thank you.

What you should do is get a scan and clear the codes.

Then drive a while until they come on again.

Do another scan and if the same faults come up then you know the cause.

Normally a dodgy brake light swtich sets the glow pluf symbol off, orange coil on the dash.

The possible causes I listed previously can cause intermiettent faults as they could be happening intermittently. EG bad wiring to the MAP sensor could be causing intermittent loss of comms to the sensor thus thrwoing the fault.

I suggest you do the above first and take it from there

John

Thanks John

Ive had the faults cleared and the same two codes come back again.

I shall get the wiring to the map sensor checked. If that is found to be ok i will probaly proceed with my original thought of getting both the sensors replaced.

Many thanks for your replies and i shall report back once resolved.

Thanks again
Terry

fault problems.

Hi Terry 2, I have just spent over £600.oo trying to get loads of faults(yours and more) cleared, i will say the FIRST TOP JOB to get done, is you must have the throttle body thouroughly cleaned out, this is really a problem connected with 'ALL' the 1.4 petrol cars in general, if after having the above done, and problems still occur the next move would be to have the map sensor replaced!! be warned, after this point the money really starts to spiral upwards, but i hope this guidance may help avoiding crazy prices. My car ran as new with no problems at all, yet all the FAULTS kept popping up, l have to say that 'A2s' are so over supplied in the ELECTRICAL department it beggers belief, how they (A2s) ever manage to move/ drive is amazing!( UTTER and TOTALLY OVER ENGINEERED in the electical side of things) is my opinion, yet after all this i do really love my car, if only it would drive without the niggling problems spoiling my enjoyment, after this rant, all the best i hope you get sorted,
Cheers ALAN.
