faulty fuel guage?

faulty temp guage?

Hi,

Just got my 1.6 sport last week after looking for months for the right one and have just become a member and i wonder if anyone can help regarding my temp guage. when i turn on the ignition the dial moves to the 60 on the temp guage but has never moved from this point even despite me driving 200 miles home in it from the garage on the motorway, is this normal before i call in my warranty? speaking as someone whose mechanical knowledge extends to putting the keys in and turning it !!!

thank Don.

Suggest you fill up the tank first and do another 200 miles to see if any change. Also check the fuse box (I think it's under the panel under dash) - remove fuse for instruments and replace it again - this should reset the dials.

Other suggestion would be to get a VAG COM / PC laptop to check fault codes if this doesn't work.

Cheers

Thanks for that i will try the fuse tommorrow. i have noticed a couple of times the guage starts to rise then drops back to the 60 mark, just want to know if the needle is supposed to move to the centre of the guage once running? and if what i am describing is not right if so its under audi warranty and i will get it sorted.

thanks don.

My feul gauge won't go past 3/4 full even when I brim the tank.

Do you mean fuel gauge of temp gauge, cos you put temp gauge in your first post? Confused.

Let me know if the fuse pulling does the trick.
Cheers

yes put fuel guage on by mistake i have edited that its my temp guage and as i have said it moves from resting at the far left as you look at it to the 60 mark when you turn on the ignition and thats it and i am sure it should at least sit in the middle when its running especially after 4 hours on the motorway but it doesnt budge. had a look at the fuses but wasnt sure which one would do the job? thought the closest description would be number 1 but all the instuments were still working so i knew it wasnt that one and i was losing the will to live and having david banner moments even trying to get that out and in with the tool as i think they were designed for childrens hands. as i have said i just want to know if it is normal that the temp guage stays at 60 if not its under audis warranty and might aswell get it done for nothing.

Thanks don

Mine sits right in the middle. But it is a 1.4TDi.

Could be your thermostat on the blink...

Hi Don
It takes a while to get there but the temp gauge normally sits at a rock solid 90C. If your gauge goes straight to 60 form cold then there is definitely a problem, probably with the temp sender unit. Definitely a warranty job.

Cheers Spike

Hello Don,

There is a known fault with the temperature senders which can cause this problem.

As Spike says, get it done under warranty.

Cheers,

Mike

thanks for the help i have booked it in although apparently i have to take it to them initially for them to look at it and if it needs repaired i then have to again book it back in to get it done, bit of a pain when my nearest audi dealer is a twenty miles round trip to another part of the city but who am i to complain??? i take it there was never a recall for the known fault described above, hope i dont start regretting getting rid of my E Class !!!!

hi,

thanks for the replies got it booked in under warranty.
i have noticed that a few times the guage does start to move to the centre however it quickly drops back to the 60 mark.

thanks don.

hi,
as advised it was the temp sender that needs replacing and it is getting done on the 13th nov, hopefully the last fault for a while !
thanks don

Re warranty claims and your departed E-class - my partner heard someone say yesterday that the previous E-class has so far racked up 2 billion warranty claims for Mercedes Benz! It was someone who might know....

hi
i have had large mercs for years mostly the e class with the only fault being a stereo that turned itself on when it wanted when the car was locked ? i have only deviated once from mercs during this time for an A4 which i had for a year and it spent a lot of that time in the garage with them failing miserably trying to fix numerous problems. what i finally got fed up with was the fact mercs appear to be painted with water based emulsion as they rust like an old datsun however they cost a hell of a lot more, the main reason was the 16 mpg in town !! hope my A2 does not dissapoint like my A4.
Thanks Don
