Finally got 7 digit postcode on the RNS-E

POT KETTLE! While I applaud everyone and anyone with genuine AUDI parts there are some contributors with Audi A2 cars (remember that I'm back here for the second time) that most certainly are/were not factory supplied or indeed have Audi GmbH/Audi UK items; so a degree of flexibility on the Forum needs to be afforded here.

While I would applaud everyone and anyone purchasing Audi authorised products I know from my own hands-on experience with the Audi RS3 (I've owned from New) that Audi GmbH authorised products aren't all they're cracked up to be - and I've been as high as you can get with oxygen with Audi UK on the Audi RS3/Audi GmbH issues, however... So unless you've a proper Audi A2 that looks like a proper ex-factory Neckasrsulm plant Audi A2 both inside and out then pot and kettle should come before any critique of anyone offering alternative products to resolve Audi developed issues.

OK, so I'm listed as a 'Rookie' but my 70'th is behind me; but I still have my 55-years of hands-on experienced and I'm currently having to send post-Audi dealership RS cars away, but: the "AUDI RNS-E Navigation Plus 2015 UK/Europe Map with 7-digit postcodes" I advocated earlier (from these guys: [email protected]) works perfectly on both of my "other" Audi cars and those of others; and that's more than I can say for the "GENUINE" Audi products...

Pays yer money and yer takes yer choice...

So let them having Audi A2's that are not as Audi intended cast their stones...

PS: I LOVE our Audi A2 1.4 TDi (90bhp) so much that Suzy (our A2) is having some TLC paintwork this next week; staying STD as nature intended mind even though there are those that think she's been re-trimmed albeit superbly...

There is a big difference between non OEM parts and pirated software.

As a moderator on here I cannot recomend pirated software.
The club cannot condone it officially either.

So this is not a case of OEM versus non OEM. I have used most parts that are non OEM on my car.

But as I said, I work in the software industry and piracy is a huge problem.

I was not saying "Don't buy" I was just saying that we as a site cannot be seen to recomend illegal software.
The same applies to illegal VCDS software, we can't be seen to recomend that either.

So you may have misread my intent and I am not happy with the "pot kettle" remark. That is unfair but if you misunderstood my reasons for posting that then I can see how it may have appeared like that.

I'm confused by the 'pot kettle' statement and I find your italic font hard to read could you please change that to normal text so I don't have to read your post with my head canted to one side.

Steve Birchall's comment was relating to pirated software. Nothing to do with non OEM modifications and he was completely correct. As a responsible club we cannot endorse the use of 'illegal' products. It's availability and success in application is immaterial to that fact

I may be misunderstanding you or perhaps one or both of us has been on the Sunday lunch sherry but if it's be it must have been administered when I was napping. :p

No worries, Murdo...

But anyone needing to know, see post #2, now knows and can decide for themselves.

But, if you don't want to know of the alternatives available then maybe one should not ask; again see post #2; as I'm sure a local Audi UK distributor can provide without the need for a dual-layer DVD.

Me and mine? Sorted, thanks... :)

Hi,

A "friend of mine" has just bough the disc via eBay for £19.95.

The seller sent two discs because "some RNS E units are fussy about copied discs", which seems fair enough.

I took 4 attempts on each disc before the software finally loaded.

I can confirm that the full PostCode search is now fully enabled and the RNS E unit is so much better for it now, That really was a limiting factor and was very disappointing when I had the conversion to RNS E done.

A quick comment for those that have not yet used a disc with the speed cameras, please be aware that you will not get audible warnings when you approach one, you get the locations of the speed / traffic light cameras showing on your map only.

I don't find that all that useful, because the last thing you should be doing in a strange area, is looking at the map display all of the time to see if there are any cameras. Especially since these cameras are meant to be positioned in "accident black spots", where you need to concentrate on your driving even more!

But the improvement to the RNS E thanks to the PostCode upgrade is significant.

"My friend" is very happy with the upgrade even though he realises that this may be pirated software (his choice)

O.K. This arrived today :- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161806642523?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT I inserted it and it seems to be working perfectly! A few

things to mention .... I have a Mk1 RNS-E.(there has been some comment on the A2OC regarding the Mk2 version being more likely to reject this type of upgrade) You are still asked for a "street",

even after 7-digit postcode entry, but you have a choice of only one! (so that is easy). I have not been able to check-out the speed-camera side of things, because I've not driven anywhere, yet. There

seems to be no way of checking the disc contents to see if speed-cameras are there as a feature? So, unless the disc fails or crashes in the next few Months, I can say that this is a fantastic purchase

for only £7.99, and makes the RNS-e what it should always have been!

David

I forgot to mention, that if you have speech recognition (SDS) this will not work with the full postcode, you have to enter the full postcode manually (or just use the short code if you want to speak it). The speech recognition only works with the old version of the postcode entry.
The SDS was designed for the MK1 and so it doesn't control the "media" operation (because that does not exist on the MK 1, there is just a CD/TV function).

But apart from that the SDS operates fine.

I have had a few issues with this disc, so I want you to be aware of them, just in case you might be inclined to buy from this lister :- Here are my findings ....

(a) The disc loaded easily and seemed to be working correctly in my Mk 1, 2011 Yr RNS-E.

b) Certain postcodes don't seem to be recognised? For example, my own postcode, CH8 9BD .... you can enter CH8, but then there is only "7" available to continue .... No"9" at all!

(c) Even when the full postcode can be entered, sometimes you are then left with only one option to continue of the four that would normally be offered on the RNS-E. That option is " special

destination" That is no good to be able to get the route and to proceed to the correct destination!

(d) It is stated that speed-cameras are shown when on route, but I have seen no evidence on the RNS-e map when I have passed long-established speed-cameras?

So, be aware! I will let you know what response I receive from the lister ....

David

Have you actually enabled the speed cameras in the POI?

Good point.

The speed cameras are just classed as a POI like hotels, car parks, etc.

They might not be obvious and often have a strange "tag" so go to the list of POIs and flag the ones that you don't recognise and it may well then start showing them.

As for the postcodes, they should either work for the majority of post codes or not at all. Once you have the software update to enable the 7/8 digit post code search the rest is down to the map data and if you have current map data (2015 as stated) then you should have all of the post codes available?

Tomorrow I will try your postcode in mine and see if it recognises it.

Hi David

I just tried this on mine.
The reason you can't enter anything other than 7 is that you have to enter a space after the 8 (it is on the dial) I was then able to enter the rest of your postcode.
BUT !!! There was no street available, just special destinations.
I then changed it to CH8 9BB and BA etc and I was then able to select the street so it must be a problem with the post code mapping on all discs.

So it looks like it is not the seller's fault, the data seems to be missing from some post codes.

If you enable the speed cameras on your POI list then you will have exactly the same options as I have from a different seller .

Steve B

Have you actually enabled the speed cameras in the POI?

No I hadn't ... thank you, Craig.

And thank you, Steve, for your usual, helpful input!

So this is how to complete full postcode entry :-

Most post-code entry's will automatically insert the space between the groups of digits, but certain post-code entry's don't automatically insert it and if this isn't there, then you can't proceed with

the full code. So you have to put the space there using the RNS-E.

Having fully entered the postcode, you get the option of "street", or in certain cases, only "special destination". So select "special destination" and it will have the option of "find entry". Select this

and there will be a list with only the postcode that you have entered being shown. Among the options is "set as destination". Select this and the route is fully planned! There is, however, no actual

confirmation of the street or full address that is shown as the destination?

So having gone "back to the drawing board", I can again say that this disc is a great addition to the RNS-E and would appear to be fully functional. Amazing, and a surprise that it has taken so long to

add these features ! ( 7-digit postcode search and speed-camera alerts ) I have noticed that the Lister's price has risen slightly, now, from the £7.99 that I paid, but it is still very reasonable

Good to read you guys are getting this sorted.

Hope you weren't snippy with the eBay vendor when you thought it wasn't working properly David!!

You'll need to back pedal with a serving of humble pie :p

No, I was very polite and diplomatic! He was very quick to respond and also very helpful! I've had support from all sides .... The lister and the A2OC! It.s great to have such a positive and kind

response!

Hi David,

a massive swerve here but your posts always have extra spacing that makes them read strangely, I would guess that you are pressing enter when the line gets near the edge of the window.
If you just keep keying the text without ever pressing "enter", the line will always be automatically formatted.
You only need to press "enter" when you want to start keying a new paragraph.

I hope that you take this as friendly

advice?

I had also considered pointing this out, but was/am unsure of what's causing David to do this. It's not something you see in David's older posts. I wondered whether David was formatting the text for his monitor of a given screen resolution, not realising that this would cause it to look strange on other people's monitors.

David, are you pressing enter or inserting a huge number of spaces in the middle of sentences? Your posts always appear a

little like this. With random, strange spaces in the middle of

nowhere. It's not as though the gaps appear neatly at the end of sentences, after the full stop. There'll be a good few lines of text before suddenly

another random line space. Can you think of what you might be doing that causes this? When you read your own posts on the forum, can you see what we're talking about? It's not a massive problem but, as Steve says, it does make things a little more difficult to

follow.

Cheers,

Tom
