Finally got 7 digit postcode on the RNS-E

Good to read you guys are getting this sorted.

Hope you weren't snippy with the eBay vendor when you thought it wasn't working properly David!!

You'll need to back pedal with a serving of humble pie :p

O.K.,but you can see from the above thread by "Murdo" that I'm not alone in double-line spacing, but I respond to input from other A2OC members and I'll now use just single-line spacing from now on

Hia David. No need to put my name in inverted commas. Murdo is my given name. The guys aren't talking about double line spacing. It's that your posts drop a word off a sentence which then starts on the next double spaced line! !

So that last sentence would appear as .....double spaced

line

It does look a little odd but it's never bothered me personally and it's an endearing DJ-ism in my view. Please take that as a fraternal endearment and not an insult!!

Hi David,

It is not the double spacing, that is not what we are talking about, it is the way that the line stops half way through and continues further down, as if you pressed enter at that point.

The end result is that you have a sentence that would normally read like this one here

But in your case you often write

The end result is that you have a sentence that would normally

read like this one here.

Perhaps you are not seeing it because your screen size matches what you are keying.

If you alter the size of your screen (perhaps pressing the ctrl key and using the mouse wheel or touch pad.

It is not a big deal and we are not saying that you are doing anything wrong but your posts are the only ones that do this and they would read better.

I am pretty sure that it is due to the fact that you press enter at the end of the line on your screen.

Please try it without pressing enter, just keep keying the text until the end of the sentence.

We are just trying to help, I really hope that you realise that

Yes, I do realise that you are all being helpful and I'm appreciative of that! I certainly didn't know of the broken lines, either. When I review the post, sometimes there are awkward spaces, so I have to redo areas. It then looks perfect (to me), but obviously not to the rest of the A2OC! I'll keep to simple one-line text from now-on! Murdo, I need to get my English language use sorted-out! Tom (Timmus) has, in the past, also pointed out my incorrect use of inverted commas " " around his name! Sorry!

Hi David

olease don't reduce abything or change your posts just because of a small thing like this.
It really isn't a problem worth changing. It was just that it might have been easily sorted.
PLEASE just stay as you are. Your posts are great and you are a credit to the club so please don't change anything

Surprised the RNS-E is still so popular - for the money they make on eBay, you can buy a Chinese lookalike with touchscreen, nav, Bluetooth phone and streaming, decent-sized hard drive etc. The cheaper Chinese units may not be as polished as the big names, but they compare favourably with the ancient RNS-E technology.

My RNS E has two 32gig SD cards, LED screen, sat nav with speed cameras, full postcode search, auto reroute around traffic jams, RDS radio, text traffic reports, Bluetooth telephone, fits perfectly into the dash, everything is voice activated (including speaking a telephone number that is not stored), full integration with the DIS and multifunction Steering Wheel, and iPad iPod, DTV, reversing camera connectivity. etc etc

i would hardly call it ancient.
Expensive ? Yes, but it is perfect for what I want.

Lack of a touch-screen and the sat nav software dates the RNS-E massively (although I can see that the OEM integration is a positive). Twirling knobs to enter postcodes was a pain fifteen years ago.

I don't like touchscreen interfaces when you're on the move. At least with the RNS-E with it's actual, physical buttons, you can operate it without even looking at the screen.
I agree it's disappointing that the factory sat-nav software doesn't have full 7 digit postcodes and it requires an aftermarket hack to the disc software for that to work.

Touch screen in the position of the unit (I.e. Low down and central is far from ideal).
I prefer to not touch anything. With the optional voice recognition kit (OEM) I don't have to touch the screen or even a control knob. I can tell the RNS E unit where I want to go. Stored locations are even easier. Just say "navigate to home" and that is it. Or spell out the town, postcode, street, house number etc and you have set up you guidance without touching anything.

So I think it is as advanced as anyone would need. The sat nav (now with the full postcode search installed) does everything I want it too.

Can we just agree to differ?
You (and others) don't like the RNS E and I (and others) do? Personal taste and all that.
But my RNS E is not ancient and has all of the tech options I need.

My A1 (now gone) had the latest sat nav kit including google images and street view instead of maps, but apart from that I don't miss anything now I have the RNS E.

Some people have spent a lot on their RNS E and like them a lot, but effectively you are criticising their choice, which you are entitled to do, but it will trigger responses.

In some ways it is a bit like saying that someone's wife is ugly!!! You might be right but you would get a reaction when you say it.

But it is all just down to personal choice as I say?

My RNS E has DTV,

I didn't know about that? Interesting ..... What type is it and what about reception? I'm in North Wales and DVBT reception isn't too good. I will try a glass-mount aerial that transmits the signal through the screen to a receptor. The recommended location for the aerial is near to the rear-view mirror. What do you use, Steve?

Absolutely, I'm just surprised there doesn't seem to be much uptake of aftermarket systems on the forum. Will say that I've never really got on with voice control (or at least that offered by Range Rover and Mercedes).

I have the IMA unit to connect AV to the RNS E, this gives me the ability to connect a DVBT unit, reversing camera etc.

I haven't got around to fitting the TV unit yet, but I have fitted many of these in the past.

Why I have fitted so many? It is not a sideline, it is for the very reasons you state, the reception on every DVTB unit I tried was RUBBISH and I bought lots of different aerials to try and get something to work.

Then when I bought my A1 I had one final try, I found a cheap digital TV tuner kit on eBay (they all tend to be cheap anyway) and it came with two small powered interior aerials that are glued to the glass. They were not big and became quite unnoticeable, so I didn't hold out much hope, but what a surprise!!! I was able to get full crisp and clear reception (even on the move, not on public highways of course). Up until I tried that kit I was convinced that Digital TV in a car was impossible without a mega expensive kit as used in factory installations.

I will dig through my old A1 posts on the A1 Forum and see if I can find the link to the one I used.

I know what you mean, some of the voice control systems are poor, but this one is surprisingly good.

I can spell out a town as quickly as I can speak it or say a group of numbers for the telephone and it gets them right virtually always.

But then I LOVE gadgets and gimmicks.

Just for information - I bought the 2015 navi disc from the same link as DJ190 as an experiment. Unlike DJ190 who has the Mk1 RNS-E which is known to be relatively happy with aftermarket DVD-Rs, I have a Mk2 RNS-E, which is known to be relatively fussy.

Let's just say the experiment has been short lived. Yes it provides full UK 7 digit postcode look up, but within less than 5 minutes of use within my Mk2 unit, it started playing up - manifest firstly as lag on the sat nav map update whilst following a route, then the dreaded "No navi media" error message on the DIS and the whole thing stopped working.

Interestingly, with the same route guidance still active, I swapped out the copy disc and re-inserted the genuine navi-disc I have. The unit became happy again and I was able to continue my route with the 7 digit postcode as the destination with the normal disc. However, this didn't last; once I'd switched off at arrival and then re-started to put in a new destination, it had lost the ability to find 7 digit postcodes again.

So - yes - these discs will give you full 7 digit UK postcodes. But in my case with a Mk2 RNS-E at least, the discs don't work correctly.

As I said. It works fine on my MK 2 but I had to load the disc several times. The seller sent two identical discs because they can be a bit tricky to load, especially on the MK 2. But once loaded they have been fine fir over a week now with no problems.

It sounds like you have a dodgy disc so I am sure your seller will refund or replace.

But my seller charged £19 and sent two discs. So perhaps his were slightly better quality? Or perhaps I was just lucky.

Hi,

A long overdue update.

The disc my "friend" bought stopped working and this was just before a destination and so very inconvenient. It constantly did that and even though the supplier provided a second disc in the pack neither worked for more than a few miles, so my "friend" gave up. The MK2 RNS E is known to be super sensitive to the type of disc used.

Recently there was an advert for another disc, 2016 with speed cameras and 7 digit Postcode, so he thought he would give it a try.

This time it worked perfectly and has stayed working ever since!

The link is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=232108381409#ht_2340wt_1187

As I have said before we as a club can't recommend pirate software, but my "friend" is now very happy and as I say that is on a MK2 RNS E.
