First A2 - Project

Evening all,

Only joined the forum recently but I've been very busy and I've always enjoyed documenting my work as I go along in hope we can all help one another with bits we go through.

I picked up at a TDI completely blindly while isolating and collected following. I knew it was a gamble but felt at the price point it was one I could take and following an hour plus on the phone with the seller he seemed fairly honest and open about everything. I probably overpaid and was misled a fair bit but I'm lucky enough to be able to complete the majority of work myself so feel It isn't to great of a loss.

Once I had it on the drive i immediately started to investigate bits and came up with a fairly extensive list:

- NSF driveshaft inner CV broken.
- OSF Anti roll bar drop link ball joint damaged.
- Oil leak from oil cooler/filler area.
- Rear engine mount worn.
- No handbrake ( not yet investigated as front end up).
- NSF ABS loom requires replacement.
- Bulge in NSR tyre.
- Exhaust missing from flexi onwards.
- Boost pressure sensor missing and vac lines a mess.
- Investigate leak by EGR and functionality.
- investigate leak by rocker and tandem pump.
- Investigate OSS fault.

These are excluding the cosmetics as I'd like to ensure she's sound before investing anything on the exterior which does clearly need some work too.

I've completed a number of these jobs now but am still trying to source some parts to get her finished but she's definitely moving forward and all the posts on here have been an excellent hand.

Hi Tom, Welcome on board! I am Andy Clayton that you have already had parts off via facebook, so you now have another outlet for parts on here.
There is a wealth of knowledge on here, and some VERY helpful members who can post links etc if you have any problems, these guys tend to KNOW their stuff and not guess left right and centre about things.
Enjoy fixing your toy, it is so satisfying when you finally get all the jobs done.
Andy

Hi Andy,

Excellent and thanks again for sending me this way it has already helped a great deal. I have now fitted almost everything you sent and resolved a large number of issues thanks to a number of threads here.

I'll be in touch

Just a brief update I've managed to get the following done and things are definitely moving in the right direction:

- Repair NSF Mirror unit
- New NSF driveshaft
- Rear engine mount
- Aux belt tensioner
- Front drop links
- Oil cooler gaskets
- Oil service
- Boost pressure sensor
- Re route vac pipes from turbo, egr and boost pipes to correct sensors and remount
- Remove EGR for cleaning
- Install working cup holders and air vent

I've probably missed a few bits and I'll try to get some up to date pictures when I'm back underneath and as I continue to work my way through.

The next bits on my list are to investigate the handbrake, fit the NSF abs loom when it arrives and decide on the best course for the exhaust.

Right a brief update of where the car stands now after a busy couple of weeks

Work completed

Front Drop links
NSF driveshaft
Rear engine mount
Oil service
Oil cooler gaskets
Air filter replaced.
Boost pressure sensor fitted and n75 vac lines routed correctly.
EGR Valve cleaning.
Remapped ECU installed
Depronman Egr deleted (refit properly)
Replacement climate control panel installed.
OEM chorus Radio installed.

To do:

Mechanicals:

- Re torque all bolts
- Fit ABS loom to NSF
- Rebuild engine bay and install wiper arm.
- Investigate handbrake issue.
- Remove Downpipe
Source and fit complete exhaust
- Fuel filter replacement.

Its been a long process due to sourcing and awaiting parts in between work but I feel the end is definitely in sight and once I get my head around the abs harness I don't think it will take much.

Back at if today, torqued all the bolts up from work done up to this point. I still seem to have a slight leak from the oil cooler area which I will keep an eye on.

I also removed the remaining section of downpipe from the turbo snd unfortunately I've noticed a previously broken stud. I soaked the the 3 nuts for s number of days in deep creep and they weren't too difficult once I got a ratchet on them.

Finally I had a brief look under the rear to try and confirm the tank size before ordering or looking for an exhaust. I believe based on the exhaust route and tank location i have a 34l be it if anyone can confirm this great as I can start asking around.

I'm considering a custom system if I can't source something second hand as I'm really unsure of the quality of the aftermarket systems available. Any recommendations are more than welcome.

Thanks.

I’m surprised that other than the flexi (common failure point) that the rest of the exhaust is in poor condition

I got the car missing the exhaust from the Flexi back. But I'd imagine you would be right as the second hand items I've seen seem to be in great condition to this day.

Over the years I have had hundreds of cars, none as satisfying as the A2, because it doesn’t rust! Also being a high end product it’s well built in the first place. My first A2 was in a similar condition but working through it was a pleasure. I repaired my front abs loom using heat shrink, solder and decent speaker wire. Good work Sir!

Ha sorry I missed that fact
Do any of the on site breakers have a second hand exhaust ?
could be cut into sections for transport as originally camme in one piece

No trouble it is a little unusual. I've popped and advert up in the wanted section so fingers crossed I'll have some luck.

Thanks

A few more jobs done and she's beginning to look more complete at long last. The cosmetics may be left a little longer but mechanically she is almost there.

Since the last update:

- Door card removed for mirror installation and mirror trim replacement (snapped original on removal)
- New speaker cover fitted to osr door card.
- New grab handle installed due to damaged trim.
- Handbrake shoes and wheel cylinders. replaced due to a leaky cylinder and worn shoes.
- Engine bay rebuilt.
- Depronman Refurbed wiper installed.

Remaining:

- ABS harness install.
- Exhaust install.
- Drivers door strap.
- 2 rear tyres due to perishing and bulge in sidewall.
- MOT Day
