Footwell Lighting.

Now normally I approach after-market mods with significant caution. I always cringe when I see Corsa's and Nova's 'cruising' around looking like they have been covered in Bostik and then ram-raided Halfords...

However I did see something in a car that a mate of mine had last week that was rather cool. The car was a Jag XJ8 and was very s****y indeed! Upon opening the door the customary interior lighting was supplemented by lighting in the footwells. The lamps were not visible, they were tucked away up behind the dash, and the effect was terrific.

It made me think how nifty that kind of footwell lighting would look in my A2. Can you imagine it with red bulbs to complement the dash lighting?
So my question is, would this be something easy to retro-fit? The lamp assembly would not need to be fancy as it would not be visible, but ideally it would be connected to the same dimmer that fades the main interior lighting up and down.

I'd be interested to hear what anybody thinks, or any ideas as to how this may be achievable?!

Cheers in advance!

Haaaa Haaaaaa!!!! Oh, I just love forum censors! That word above was supposed to be s.w.a.n.k.y!!!!!!!! Y'know, like fancy! Oh, thats really tickled me! I really should use that 'Preview' button...

Phil,

Sure, just pick up a wire that leads to the interiorlighting in the roof and that runs from the switches in the doors. Attach some red (high brights) leds to it and presto, S****y as can be !!

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for that. Is it really that easy? What about the dimmer? Surely that sits close to the light in the roof?

Admittedly, I'm a bit of a wetbag when it comes to these kinds of things, I get a liiiiitle nervous about yanking wires out from behind/under the dash! I'll have a poke around and see what I can see..

Without wanting to be a party pooper, Phil might have a good point.

Are the dimming electronics located in the main lighting unit or in a relay tucked up under the dash somewhere.
If it's in the light unit it might be a bit more tricky to get the dimming effect on the new lamps.
Anyone got a wiring diagram?

Another option I've just thought of is the possibility of having the red LED's on when headlights are on - similar to the VW Phaeton ambient lighting. I'm sure someone on a german forum has done this in their A2 (red LED's up top, not down below)

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

Sounds like we're trying to reinvent the 'Knight Rider'. Last person I know who thought of putting red lights in the car for a 'ghoul - like effect' had a Vauxhall Viva. Not sure about this one.[B)]

There is someone on the german forum (member A2TDI) who has lighted the interior, the space below the ashtray, the door boxes, the door handles, the ventilation controls, white led´s in the underside of the mirrors and a lighted compartment under the radio... (not to mention he retrofitted the small Audi navigation unit, DIS and Bose system...), he must have taken apart the whole car...:)
Apparently you can get to the dimmer on the side of the dashboard, because that´s where he attached the lighted mirrors, too...
If you are interested, I will find out... or translate this thread http://www.a2board.de/thread.php?threadid=68&sid=.

Bye, Frido.

In my opinion the footwell lights should only be on when the door is open. No need to see your footies when you're driving.
It is really that easy. You could also try to grab a wire from the console in the roof. But that would also switch on the footwell lights when the interior light is manually switched on.
The wire from the door can be used to just switch on the footwell lights when the door is open. LED's are very hard to dim too...
