Free MOT? with a bang noise from car

I was reading on audi's website about the free MOT offer, im just wondering if I should avoid having an MOT at audi knowing that they will try and find a problem.

A real plus was when I saw you can pay for your MOT and they will give you protection if anything is wrong upto £750 to repair however in the terms small print it says the car must not be older than 7 years. Mine is just over 7 years.

So lets say audi find a fault? ARB, Droplinks need replacement, are these MOT points that your vehicle fails on? or can they only advice for these to be repaired.

Bang noise (just once every so often)

The problem which im quite sure it is not the ARB (not a rattle), could it be the droplinks I have a bang when im driving along, it happens even if you are driving on a straight road. No bumps, but it will sometimes happen when you have most of your wheel lock on or going over speed bumps.

Some days it will not be heard, it only happens about once or twice a day.

So im not sure if it is the suspension, I can't work out which side the noise comes from, because it is very hard to know when it will do it. Speed does not affect the noise as you can have full lock on turning the car and it will do it or you could be driving at 50.

Any ideas?

Busted spring at the front, probably very low on the coil, inside the spring retainer pan on the strut; ie the last 2/3 inches.

my 2p's worth is a worn out strut top bearing --- gets stuck when steering and puts tension on the spring and then lets go hence the bang.this can lead to a broken spring if it hasn't already!!
other idea is one of the underfloor covers is loose and banges on the floor with wind pressure?
either way it should be spotted on the mot cheers mike

I had one of those "free" MOTs at Audi. Their notes on the vehicle inspection included :
WORN AND SPLIT FRONT WIPER- which is wasn't.
LOW OIL LEVEL-which it wasn't having checked it myself from cold the day before.
However I did have to have the ARB replaced with bushes (MOT fail) and a track rod end too (ADVISORY)
The only bonus is it could have cost a further £ 108 for the 1st and retest.

It's a gamble for sure.

Hi Richard,

I took mine for the free MOT a few months ago now. It Passed! Like you I expected them to try and find something wrong. They were very thorough, taking around an hour and a half. every other MOT I've had done was done in about 20 mins.

My car was a very rattly over bumps, but it passed. I knew the ARB had been done, so after reading on here that it seemed likely the drop links were worn, I changed them and all is now quiet. So my car passed with worn drop links.

Why not take it in, It's FREE, have a coffee, and a poke around the R8 and if it fails, you can always take it somewhere else, or if it's minor, like a bulb, have them fix it.

Good luck
