Front cross member

A2 Folks

Some young kid bashed into the little A2 a couple of days ago, made a hell of a noise on impact though on first glance only the bumper appears slightly damaged.

On closer inspection the service flap doesn't line up with the latch so won't quite close. With the bonnet off I can now see the intercooler shroud is cracked as the front cross member (behind the bumper) is folded in / creased towards the intercooler. My first thoughts are insurance are likely to write off the poor wee thing. I;ve just spent a heap on rear brakes and getting it running in fine fettle with new thermostat, temp sensor, new wheels, fully valeted, new door latch etc. etc.

I guess the cross member is a crumple zone so designed to do that so depends if the chassis legs are all good then it could still be viable to keep but depends on insurance decision I suppose. Ah b****r :/

You could maybe buy it back assuming it's classed as not structural damage even if insurance write it off. Fingers crossed though. ? I believe it makes it harder to sell on but if it's a 'keeper' then that's not a bother.

With parts not being readily available and a body shop spray job costs including the labour rates it’s very likely it will be written off TBH..

That leaves you options..

Come to an arrangement with said lad and see if you can come to an arrangement to fix it at his cost.(unlikely)

Risk the insurance writing it off -buy it back and repair.

Look on here and eBay at prices for your broken bits.. see if lad will pay for said broken bits and get your hands dirty replacing them..

Hope it comes good for you and the little car.

I could supply most of the front end for less than £100 so I think you'd be better off avoiding the insurance altogether.

As long as the frame of the A2 is ok, everything else is bolt on.

All depends if you could do the work yourself.

Appreciate the input folks, I'll see what develops, first thing I think is to verify extent of the damage. I'd like to keep the car if possible as it runs great and was quite a high options spec Sport model. Will see.
Cheers

I guess if it's 'just' the bumper and bumper crash bar and intercooler shroud then that won't add up to much and very viable to replace. Fingers crossed. Will be in touch A2Steve once I know more, Cheers

Best way would be to pop the front bumper off. It's only about 30-40 minutes work and it would reveal the full extent of the damage.

I dented two doors on my A2 on a gatepost several years ago. The insurance company wanted to write the car off but eventually they gave me £1300 and I kept the car.

I anticipated a write off so:

1. I refused to have the car collected, once they have it your negotiating position is weakens and they could charge storage

2. I made the insurance company repair technician, not the approved repairer, visit me

3. Know how much your car is worth and stick out for a cash in lieu of repair deal.

Could be an easy way of making a few quid assuming the other drive was at fault.
