Front suspension rust

After another pot hole I was checking under the front of the car and noticed that the front edge of both the lower suspension arms were rusting.

Has anyone else had this and tried to get Audi to treat and repaint under warranty?

This seems to be the same problem as using steel hubs on the rear. Saving weight I guess is the reason for steel rather than cast iron, or do most cars today use steel?

P.S. aren't they quite low these A2 - well, compared to my previous cars they are, and I've got 17" wheels. Are vehicles with 15" even lower?

I've treated all steel parts with anti corrosion spray. It's a thick bodyspray that protects the steel parts against stone chips etcetera that will cause corrosion in time. I've also discovered that the paint on suspension parts is very very thin and will probably cause corrosion in time even though not being hit by stones, unless treated. I doubt Audi will cover this unless it's corrosion that is through the steel.

What make is that and is it available at Halfords or similar?

Don't know what is available in your country but here there are for instance Corrostabil and Carlofon that makes this stuff that goes on vehicle parts as rust protection. We have a very hard climate here. Winter lasts for six months, grit and road salt are agressive to a car and usually it's corrosion that kills a car here, not the mechanical bits...

My front landing panel developed some rust, of course Audi tried to get out of replacing it, saying that I should have cleaned the engine bay on a regular basis!! Got it replaced in the end...

It's sometimes called the front panel or slam panel. It's where the bonnet locks and it's the piece of metal between the headlamps.

Thanks for that. I shall look at mine tomorrow but haven't noticed anything to-date.

I find waxoil to be quite effective at rust prevention.

Just stripped back the chassis on one of my other cars, and applied a chemical rust converter (Loctite brand), let this dry, then 2 coats of smooth black hammerite, then finally a coat of black waxoil.

I've used the rust prevention stuff, and hammerite on my daughters swingset, which is now 30 years old, and still holding together!
