FSD's and Insurance. Premiums changed?

Rang Tesco insurance today to inform them of my FSD's and weitec springs. Added £50 to my insurance (up from £290). Interestingly they didn't want to know what the mods were, just that it was modified from standard.

What is others experience of fitting these or similar:confused? Will my insurance always be a little higher now, or is it just Tesco milking the situation since they already had the policy?

Some insurers will charge extra for mods, others won't; some won't touch you with a barge pole with mods, others will welcome you with open arms claiming to specialise in modified vehicles. It all depends.

So Dan, given that your set up is similar to mine (minus rear ARB..ner ner!) how (ie what)did you declare to your insurance company, and who is good for "improved" cars? Quite like the idea of open arms.

I'm currently with Elephant, have declared the wheels and suspension and it didn't seem to make a difference.

hmmm... i had an on line quote with direct line the other night and with my 20k miles it came out at £280 odd-nice but in the terms and cond it clearly says standard cars,so i phoned them---"no problem sir what mods?"i told them suspension upgrade"no problem, what else?" optional Audi wheels "no problem if they are Audi accessories" thats it how much now £480 odd plus compulsory £250 excess £75 glass excess £10 ir repaired!!
so i went back to my old company co op and they now flatly refuse it as they don't do modified!!!
so i took up the direct line offer but am now thinking i should try tesco:confused:
oh well at least it is still cheaper than i was paying and true mileage and mods.:D cheers mike

As the adage goes "honesty is the best policy..." Mmm... :(

I fail to see how changing suspension components for arguably a "safer" more controlled option can increase an insurance premium. Of course from a commercial perspective, i.e. "your car is non-standard sir, so that'll be another £100 please..." I can see how an insurance company will think and act. But whatever happened to good old fashioned common sense?! If I upgrade my brake discs and pads - theoretically is that "...another £50 sir...". An engine remap, performance exhaust, bigger turbo etc... well yes; as fundamentally you have changed the cars performance; but suspension?! Ok, so the car handles better, does that automatically means that you are going to take that 30mph blind bend at 50... I think not...

I am not advocating that we are "liberal" with the truth, but I do feel bitter at being ripped off.

Rant over.

re. 'i took up the direct line offer but am now thinking i should try tesco'

Tesco's insurance is provided by Direct Line!

"tescos insurance is provided by direct line" well I said to yvonne when I was doing the online form that this is the same as direct line--but just thought it was a software share. Still it is cheeper than direct line ????? Cheers mike

I think I have mentioned this before, but I get my car insurance through A-Plan insurance in Milton Keynes. The broker (Steve Marsh) is able to access some very good deals for modified cars, which my MX-5 is classed as.

I discussed with him the A2 FSD/Weitec combo, and since the degree of lowering was minimal (~15mm) he discussed it with the insurance provider and they said it didn't make a difference.

My MX-5 was lowered by 35mm  and so that was a big no-no with most internet type insurers. Steve was able to get me a very competeitive quote (for the MX-5) with excellent cover and the option to modify to my hearts content (at no additional cost). His deal on the A2 insurance was also cheaper than any online quote! And you get to talk to the same person everytime you phone up! Imagine that! This was a real help during our recent claim after hitting a badger.

Cheers,

David

Here at Awesome, Most of our cars are insured by Brentacre.
They are very good when it comes to modifications and only insure people above 21.

We've always found them to be the best when it comes to both Modified and Standard cars!

Most of the Policies are by 'Highways Insurance' who are very efficient at dealing with claims.

The only safe way is to check with your insurer but I was once told that any mods which increased the performance of the car or made it look more attractive to thieves or joyriders would raise the premium. A change of dampers may be ok but lowered springs may not. Bodykits, spoilers, sports exhaust systems, big wheels (larger than the optional sizes offered on the car) and custom interiors are all likely to increase premiums.

Cheers Spike
