FSI injectors

Hi all,

I have removed the injectors from the FSI. They are the factory items from 2003. 2 of the 4 injectors rattle when you shake them. In your experience is this a sign of them breaking down? They are the cylinders that had misfires.

Cheers

If you want you can get them refurbished at hurley race engineering - check out my yellow peril project thread for more detail.

A refurb service won’t solve rattly injectors sadly as the needle inside the body is detached from the solenoid.

I had the same problem with misfires on both our FSI's, (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment!). After removing the injectors I stripped them using a pin wrench and cleaned the bits, (keeping each injector nozzle together with it's pintle), in an ultrasonic bath.

I could see one of them had quite a lot of axial movement on the solenoid core at the top end of the pintle. I'm not absolutely sure if there wasn't a tiny soft washer on one of them as it appeared it had disintegrated on all the others. The next time I get my hands on a new one I'll have a closer look.

Finally, when I first put these back together, I failed to notice that the nozzle is offset to the centre-line of the injector. I'm not absolutely clear if this will lead to misfires but reading the FSI blurb on stratified & homogeneous running, getting this wrong may have an effect. The lower black spot is a blind hole maybe so it's easier to align the spray drilling at the 20deg

I'll find out when I get the injectors out of the other FSI because even after I cleaned them, I still had bad misfires on light throttle. I'll report back when I get it apart.

OK so yesterday I removed the injectors and sure enough, one of the four had the loose solenoid core on the injector pin. I also noticed that the injectors in my 03 plate were different to the ones in the 52 plate..... Looks like Bosch changed the design of the weight on the pintle.

First the old one.... this one had lots of play on the large weight - it was possible to slide it up & down with about 1mm of movement. With that amount of play, the injector is simply moving the weight up & down and loses control of the pintle.

Now the later one....

I haven't put it back together yet as a couple of beers intervened so am on a b it of a go-slow.
