FSI issues

The last 2 weeks my car had developed a noise issue which some garages not willing to diagnose as they state the A2 is a complicated car, the symptons are when you drive in third gear (more noticable but mainly underload) and accelerate, I can here a noise I can only describe as a exhaust blow (Chuffing noise), as if the egr pipe had cracked( this was replaced less than 6000 miles ago) the noise could also be described as a if I had fitted a boy racer air filter. A garage stated the flexi pipe and rear back box were noisey and I have replaced these at some cost. After replacing the exhaust sections the rasp has gone but still have this noise, which sometimes is accompanied by throttle hesitation if just blipping the throttle whilst car parked on start up reves a little eratic 50rpm fluctuating for a few seconds.
My car has been at a Audi/VW specialist who has had the car a couple of days, he could only get the car to make the noise once, however he could only find one fault ( my diagnostic didnt pick up) fault code 17912(p1504) Intake system-leak detected though no leak found, he has cleared the code and suggested I drive it for a few days and then he will scan the car again.
He seems to think that either the egr is sticking or the MAF sensor is at fault, whilst stating the code was sporadic.

Whats your views on possible solutions:confused:

Hope you can help and advise.

Well thought I would keep this thread updated with my FSI issues, the other day scanned car to see if the air leak code (17912) had returned as this was a a code that popped up now and again but seemed to have stopped after replacing the MAF. That fault did not show but I was met by the code 17439 ( which points towards intake Manifold tuning valve or the intake flaps.

Although the code was stored and would reappear after clearing, no light was on the dash?, I booked the car into Colin Gunning in hertford and took the car to him yesterday, he called me early today to advise that the solenoid which helps control the flaps is working and believe it was potentiometer. To ascertain this fault he would need to remove the intake and also check the flaps and clean and working .

Colin has just rang me and advised the flaps are working fine and are very clean, and the fault is the potentionmeter and has ordered the part, so car should be ready Monday.

My conclusion is I would highly recommend Colin Gunning based in Hertford, he has updated me with all his findings and has also taken photos to show the intake manifold(my request ) so will get photo's on here as soon as possible. At last I have a found a Audi specialist who actually cares about his customers and treats each job with a sense of pride.

so pleased you have it sorted and with a great sounding garage. it is so reassuring to find a company that you can trust.

Well the saga continues, the potentionmeter was replced fault still present the control module replaced fault still coming up, the garage has asked to keep the car longer to investigate (Been in since Friday) Colin states the flaps appear to be moving fine and not sticking.

hi did you manage to solve the problem in the end?? i ask as i have the exact same problem with the car

going into the garage to check solenoid and air leak to engine.

codes where air intake leak and the manifold set point fault

got any estimates on cost?

thanks oli

Well although I have not been to collect car as yet, got call earlier to say its sorted. Its turned out to be the solenoid, although it appeared to be working dont believe it was working well enough. The bill is £373 that includes the initial diagnostics, stripp down to check flaps and petentionmeter etc and and an oil and filter change with Mobil 1 esp.

So to save money you could just replace the solenoid, think its about £47. The garage also replace the control unit, but as that didnt help He is not charging me for the part (£258).

blimey that was quick alan

ok i see...the local garage is looking at the solenoid next tue did they have to change the oil or did you get this done as an extra service

yer fingers crossed seems a common problem with the fsi,

luckily my vag specialist is 2 mins walk down the road lol they are slightly more expensive than some of the other backstreet garages but deffo know what they're doing.

will update thread when i get it fixed.

update

car been to garage solenoid ok flaps working not bad but dont quite reach set point preparing quote for removing manifold to check and sort.

air leak found broken brake servo pipe....stealers wanted £112 for whole new hose system garage managed to sort it by using a £3 part which matches from a mk2 golf?!

and so we'll see what the quote comes out like

My solenoid im sure showed ok but was actually broken ring the garage I used on link in earlier post and ask to speak to Colin.

update on the dreaded flaps! phone message

a strip and clean refit and replace adapter = £210 if the manifold is kaput an extra £318 to replace it total £528
