The centre bolt is for draining the fuel. They are plastic and are easily sheared off if more than hand tight - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?15528-Leaking-fuel-filter-housing&highlight=fuel+filter

In theory you drain off a small ammount of fuel using the centre bolt then unscrew the main cap (27mm ?) to change the filter. I did a friends car and the fuel kept flowing and we needed a hose clamp on one of the pipes to stop it.

I'll try and find the diagram to show which pipe to clamp - although we did it with a bit of trial and error.

Cheers Spike

I think its hose 11 (from fuel tank) which needs to be clamped. You still need a large bowl to catch fuel drainback from the engine.

Which hoses did you need to clamp ?
I suspect there are non return valves in each line which randomly stick. That would explain why some people get away without clamping any pipes, I did the one from the fuel tank and others need 2 clamps

Your pics and the other info make this thread a worthy 'How To' guide so I'll move it into that section later

Cheers Spike

i put unleaded in it about a month back so that may of cleaned a lot of cr*p out of the system so that maybe why i had a lot of sludge or should that be normal if it has not been done from new.

i clamped hoses 11 and 12 that was in the diagram in another thread and only a small amount of fuel came out that was in the filter.

the car started up fine first time so iv done all the sevice now and not a problem.

just thought id said i got the 2 clamps and the 27mm socket from halfords (clamps £5.99 each) and (27mm socket £7,49)

Been attempting to change fuel filter on my tdi90 project today, classic issue of screw where drain plug snapped, sorted with pauls bespoke part. Now the weird bit, the filter seems to have a massive hole in top compared to my replacement anyone got an internal photo of the filter housing and what it should look like please....

Ok, sorted. Took the filter out of my other 90, and sure enough, smaller size hole in top of filter. The ancient filter I took out above had separated, leaving the big hole and part of the filter inside the housing...
