Fuel Filter Heat Shield

My wife's A2 (1.4 TDI 75 PS) was making a noise underneath, that I traced to the heat shield that covers the fuel filter. I changed the fuel filter last year, and remember at the time that the thin alloy cover was loose (retaining studs on the chassis had corroded). Cut a long story short, the noise has stopped, as the guard is now missing! :D

Is this essential to replace? I understand it's there to shield the fuel filter from the exhaust and primarily that's it's main use, but it will also get road salt and general debris thrown at it, now it's missing. No doubt Audi charge an arm and a leg to replace? Would a breakers yard be a good place to look for one?

You should replace it, yes, as it'll keep the crud from the roads off the filter housing (this is especially important for those with the later type plastic housings).

A new one is around £15 from Audi and you should secure it by making holes in the cover and in the surrounding ones, then 'stitch' them together with cable ties.

Cheers,

Mike

I would be gRateful if anyone had a paRt numbeR foR this. My caR is 1.4 tdi 2001

Thanks All

You should really get confirmation of this part from an Audi parts department, as there's quite a few versions to choose from - if I tell you a part number and you go and order this, but it's wrong, then you're stuffed!

If the parts man advises you and it's wrong, then they have to take it back.

However, I will give you the part number it could be, as it'll make the parts guys work easier when you pay them a visit:

it was 8Z0 825 215A, but this was apparently dropped in 2008 for 8Z0 825 215E

However, there are also 215C and 215D parts (but strangely, no 215B!!).

Cheers,

Mike

PS Price around £16

Cheers Mike, as always appreciate the help!

There is also an E version too.

The one you require depends on the size of fuel tank you have.

Took my parts dep 2 attempts to get the right one.

I have the 42 litre tank on my diesel and Im sure I need the B version.

Parts dep said sorry dont do that, its been superseeded to D. They ordered. It didnt fit.

I then checked ETKA and looked like I needed C, so ordered and then that fitted. Will double check when i get home but im 90% sure that was the one I needed

Part ordered. This is for the 75bhp 1.4 TDI. I saw a copy of the ETKA diagram, and couldn't make head nor tale of it! The parts guy didn't even know it covered the fuel filter housing, as it's not marked on the diagram. If it doesn't fit, it's going back. :D

I fitted the part at the weekend. It was 8Z0825215E @ £15.66 plus 20% VAT of course. Worth ordering the 10mm nuts (N90798802) too, you'll need three of them. Also uses a torx screw to attach to the trim. Glad to get it fixed. :D

Resurecting an old thread , are the part numbers still valid and is or was there a list that could be cobbled together to show the parts members have bought with their corresponding car model ?

Thanks all

I find it best to offer your existing part number. Audi we be able to tell you the new part number.
I have. 2003 75 TDi. That shield has been on a shelf in my garage for years. Part number 8Z0 825 215 C.
I should fix the studs and refit it however there Is always something more urgent on my car.
Also I assumed the part would be obsolete. Must try and order one.

Sad times, noticed that my car was missing this part when I came to replace the fuel filter, gave my local Audi garage a phone and they said that 8Z0825215E has been dropped without replacement now and they were not able to source parts. Looks like I'm going to be getting out the old tin shears and some creativity

I kept mine for years intending to refit it with some aluminium plate and Steelweld.

When I finally got around to it I discovered the part had been so badly damaged by being dragged behind the car that it was just beyond saving.

I wonder if any of the parts sourcers on here perhaps keep any of the heat shields they get?

Failing that, you can buy the waffle plating used from car modification suppliers by the sheet. Expensive though.

I've wondered about using the aluminum sheet you can get from DIY stores for undertrays - you get a lot more for your money:

@gills That sheeting is way too thin and has about the same strength as tinfoil. I have used the Funk Motorsport sheeting before and previously recommended it as a suitable replacement for the fuel filter heatshield. Not cheap but as the genuine one is NLA and bet would be in the same price range.

I had a measure of the factory heatshield and it is coming in at 0.55 mm so it is only 0.05 mm thicker then the stuff from B&Q that @gills suggested. I decided to give it a go this evening.
Found that putting some bends in it and then attaching it to the factory mounts, just generally bending in a way to match the shapes of the factory one has created something very strong feeling without any rattles.

That's good to know, thank you. I might get some to try making an exhaust cover, as per the 3Ls.....

I think the bends will make the difference and give some strength. The most it should need to deal with is some wind and water (and some stones of course)

I copied another member on here and epoxied bolts to the underside of the car to give studs for mounting and some plates of alu cut into ‘washers’ along with some rubber spacers to give a secure hold on the heat shields. The plate will thus be double thick at the mounting points.

So long as the edges are well secured and the air can’t catch an edge to lift it’s got to be better than having a gap.

The waffle profiling is possibly more about heat dissipation and surface area - not likely a huge issue in our temperate climate - and maybe some aesthetics?

I got some extra material so that I can give this a try too. Found the key to making the fuel filter one was templating in card first.

This is the fruits of my labour for the fuel filter cover and the corresponding one on the driver's side. Definitely happier with how the driver's side came out but I was more practised by then. Will probably reshape the passenger's side a bit when I come to redoing the rear suspension in a few weeks.

Heat shield now in the attic, still have to find some studs.
I get around the problem sourcing heat shield materials by keeping all old ones and picking up shields lost from cars at the road side.
