fuel filter how to change

my 1.6 fsi has a small inline umbrella fuel filter on the off side engine bay next to the brake fluid reservoir

i was thinking it might be a aftermarket additon

does anyone else have this on there car, i think i will replace it or remove it

any thoughts?

Have a look at the base of this as it may be a air filter for the Turbo control valve,
My galaxy has one the but the bottom half is just a cage.

So resurrecting this one again - looks like the image hosting strikes again and no pictures.

If I get this right the fuel filter changed from metal housing post 2002 yes?

If so I think I now need to sell a couple on!

fuel filter on my early 2002 model tdi is of the full disposable type with no separate housing , quick release pipes attached to both stubs on filter and is located in front of the n/s/r wheel hiding behind an angled heat shield , hope this helps

Folks

For a 2003 model which type of fuel filter is correct?

I understand it needs to be the replacement cartridge type but over on Opie Oils the Bosch and Mahle appear somewhat different:

Mahle Fuel Filter KX86/1D (Audi A2); or
BOSCH Fuel Filter F026402084 [ N 2084 ]

Or are they the same?!

Cheers!

There was a switch over from the metal canister type to the plastic housing type in this year. The only sure way is to get your head under the car and look. It's on the nearside (UK) between the B pillar and rear wheel. Possibly covered by an ally waffle plate, but most of these have fallen off as the retaining threads have rotted.

Again, apologies for resurrecting this thread, but I've used the instructions but not had any success. We're talking about a 54-plate TDi 90, so it's got the plastic filter housing and the inevitable rusted studs holding the heat shield on. I've clamped off three of the many pipes going in and out of the housing, and then carefully undone the 10 mm drain screw. After about half a litre of fuel running out, with no sign of slowing down, I lost my nerve and tightened the screw back up again, thinking that I've not done something right, and wanting not to drain the entire tank of fuel. Did I chicken out too early, or do I need to clamp the pipe(s) right at the top of the filter housing?
Clearly many others have done this successfully, so it can't be that hard.
All constructive comments welcome (I would expect nothing else from this forum!).

Did you only clamp 3 because those clamps come as a set of 3?

Maybe try some mole-grips with rubber hose/fuel line slipped over the jaws to avoid damage as an expedient clamp.

Hi folks Just looking for conformation, I have a 2005 1.4 TDI with the plastic housing. Here it states a 27mm hex socket is required however I have just stumbled across another post stating a 36mm 6 point socket??

I've just done mine using @depronman replacement bleed. I didn't jack car high but manged okay using stand on the rubber bung circle point for lifting. My filter had 35k use. What came out was gritty and there was sludge blocking drain holes above bung. Took and hour and I was nervous and cautious and slow. I bought small hose clamps and a 27mm six sided socket as recommended. The main lid was tight and dry so hard to undo.
Foil cover tray is fragile so inspect remove it first to see if you can refit it before you start. ?

Should say old bleed was fine so keeping safe incase. Wasn't worth risk not having back up. Yes I did transfer new o rings to metal bleed.

That filter looks horrid beat place for it is the bin
You where certainly one of the lucky ones with getting the plastic drain screw out in one piece 95% snap
