Fuel Low warning light/gauge error

Garage replaced Fuel Filter (under nearside rear seat next to tank) - seemed fine till I filled the tank. Got fuel warning noise + lamp and Zero indication on gauge.

Checked fuses.

After 10-15 mins the guage corrects itself and a few mins longer the warning lamp goes out till next stop.

Any ideas?

Wonder if they've messed with the sender, which is under the offside rear seat. Was this an Audi franchised garage?

Cheers,

Mike

An independant garage - also having issue with my front suspension since I had them change the shocks, springs and top mounts - now have +ve 1 deg camber instead of previous minus 0.5 deg.

Certainly affects handling!

Which part?

VAG COM comes up with:

Address 17: Instruments Labels: 8Z0-920-xxx-17.lbl
Part No: 8Z0 920 980 JX
Component: KOMBI+WEGFAHRS. VDO D05
Coding: 00435
Shop #: WSC 00468
WAUZZZ8ZZ1N054052 AUZ7Z0A1840182

1 Fault Found:
00771 - Fuel Level Sensor (G)
30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

-------------------------------------------------
Parts according to UK Audi Dealer:

8ZO 919 183B - which seems to be the whole lot including pump and not cheap!

or

8ZO 919 673B - just the float sender but is this correct for 1.2 TDI?

Is there a way to check continuity with a multimeter on the plug terminals?

Best

According to the wiring diagrams, there are no joints or connectors between the sender and the clocks, so either the sender is going u/s or there is a chaffing wire somewhere.

There are 2 wires coming from the sender, a brown/white one that goes to the shared earth in the dash panel wiring loom and a purple/black wire that goes to pin5 of the blue connector on the back of the clocks.

Firstly try clearing the fault and see how you go on, then, if it returns, check for continuity on the purple wire and then check for a good earth on the brown wire.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike

Have tested Earth wire - very good continuity.

Need to take dash out for the other line check.

Tried to clear fault but VAGCOM came up with an error code?

If the other wire comes back as full continuity, then it sounds very much like your level sensor is U/S and needs replacement.

If a replacement is needed, then it's likely to be around the £45 mark - count yourself lucky as the petrol versions are over £200!!

Cheers,

Mike

Many thanks Mike.

OK the wires give good continuity so it looks like I have to spend another £82 plus VAT from Audi UK for whole unit or (more likely) go with VAG parts for just the 8ZO 919 673 B part for £34 plus VAT?

Is it any easy job to remove from fuel tank?

Never done the job myself, but it should be straightforward ebnough with the back seat removed.

Cheers,

Mike

Fuel gauge

Hello

As my problems are similar, I'll put my post here.
So, on Monday went to a petrol station and brimmed the tank with 32L, but then turned the key - beep, still empty. Took a few days to track more signs, also checked continuity of wire from tank to dash pin5 - OK. Resistance of the fuel gauge sender 270 kohm approx., when shaking the car it went from 260-270 on full tank. Now what happens is that when I turn the key it beeps, after few minutes the gauge is on full, yellow sign still on, than OK, but the tank is not full anymore (done 150 Km's from full). Also noticed that outside temp is 10-ish °C less than it actually is.
(this appeared a few more days ago). The only thing that is not fully okay (I think) is the resistance between fuel gauge sender and earth - 3.3 kohm. I wanted to check earth connection in dash loom, but can't find it...
What's next to check?

Thx

Cheers

I've left mine alone and after a few fill ups the gauge has become more reliable again although occaisionally get the old issue.

Best to know range of your car on one tank of fuel and then go for a fill up - use trip computer reset each time. I go for 320 miles and about 18 to 19 litres per fill up.

Sorry to bring up onld threads but was wondering if this is a similar problem with mine. Only had it a few weeks and today filled up with diesel as the guage was almost empty. Got 36L in but the guage is still only at 3/4 full. Any ideas?

Stu
