Fuel news for all FSI owners?

I was passed the following information today

It’s a list compiled showing cars that are not going to be compatible with the new E10 fuel grade that’s being released across Europe next year.

Specifically, relating to our needs

Now looking at the list of cars named, it’s all early FSI cars. I’m in talks with Adrian at Pro Boost, but initial thoughts are that the E10 is not compatible with the stratified mode of the FSI.

This would therefore mean that fitting the Pro Boost map may be the only way to continue to use the FSI in Europe from next year.

I’ll report back when I know more but if this is the case, then Pro Boost came at just the right time.

But FSI's should always be using High Octane fuel anyway? Is there indication that this will no longer be available?

Well done for pointing it out anyway Steve :)

I am unaware of any changes to E10 distribution in the EU for next year, do you have a source on that? All I can find are articles relating to an introduction of it in the UK.

In mainland europe, where E10 was introduced in 2011 as mentioned in your PDF, I have only ever been to 1 (one) gas station that did not continue to provide E5. This was in West Flanders/Belgium and the only ever time I filled up with E10. (Though mine's not an FSI of course)

Over here, E10 is 0.02 to 0.03€/litre cheaper than E5, though most people I know opt for E5 anyway since that's still available everywhere.
Some petrol stations don't even bother with E10 and the tanks are, suspiciously, almost always empty.

On top, I would expect High-Octane to still be available without the added 5% ethanol. (Seems to suggest so in the UK articles at least)

I shall remain on E5 (98/99 octane), for the foreseeable then. I believe E80, is sold, at very attractive prices, in France.
Mac.

All is not lost, it would appear that super unleaded will still be available. I read it that E10 was to replace all petrol types in the U.K. The initial articles I’d read were (as always) scare mongering and implying that E10 was now the sole petrol available.

There was mention of this either end of last year or beginning of this year that E10 is taking over the 95ron cheap fuel and that high octane V-Power and presumably the 99 ron Tesco Momentum will not be affected. This is good good news for car enthusiasts since the die hards nearly all use high octane anyway.

We don't know if it's a material incompatibility (seals etc) or the actual FSI functionality. See if @A2Steve gets any additional info from Adrian at ProBoost. No worries either way if you use 98/99 octane which is E5 (5% Alcohol), and is compatible and available for the foreseeable future. It's what we FSI'ers should be using anyway (ProBoosters excepted).
Don't worry, be happy!

Mac.

I had heard that E5 98 Ron should be available for a further four years.

Even then, I'm not sure which way round the upcoming change is: retailers are 'allowed' to sell or E10 or retailers 'have' to sell E10.

If the former, then I guess there will be a period where many retailer will have a mix of E5 and E10 95 Ron on the same forecourt. If the latter, not so much

Impressed with how many cars are actually fine on E10.

There's nothing new here, E10 has been in Europe for a long time. Here it's also 95/E10 and 98, and has been for *years*.
I believe the incompatibility is to do with seals in teh high pressure fuel pump but can't remember.

If that's the case, wasn't there a recent thread around here somewhere on changing them?

Yes,

so I was looking just now and E10 was introduced in Summer 2013 in Germany. 98 is still there - and here - you are just *required* to use it for an FSI. It's the correct fuel anyway.

I didn't find the reasons for the warning in a quick search, but I suspect it will have to do with the high pressure fuel system, whether it's the injectors themselves, the pump, seals or whatever. Remember Biodiesel was also never approved for use due to its aggressiveness towards certain fuel system components.

Can you still get E5 at all 'on the continent' (as they used to say)? Or is it E10 or walk?

Que? From SSP_223:

Before it was blended with diesel, I used to run my 1.2Tdi's on a certain oil company's biodiesel without any problems whatsoever. Even the manual states that RME is ok.
