Fuel tank size

Basically yes. When you fill up and the pump clicks as saying "full", if you then depress that switch for a few seconds, you'll hear a faint sound of of bubbling, and then if you start pumping again, you'll be able to get another 1-2 litres in. Press it again for a few more seconds and another 1-2 litres will go in. I've never done more than 4 litres of V&B but I reckon it's possible to do even more if one was so inclined.

Again, this is definitely not safe or recommends for petrol cars. The space is needed for vapour expansion.
This is my standard method on my TDI90. I tend to run down to around 5-20 miles showing on the trip computer thingy, and a fill up then usually gets me slightly over 42 litres, venting maybe 4 or 5 times.

It isn't just about buying the larger tank. There are quite a few other components to purchase. I'm wondering just what is to be gained by increasing the tank size? O.K., you obviously increase your driving range, but it's already reasonable at ~400 miles? Then, carrying the extra fuel would have a (admittedly slight) detrimental effect on fuel economy?. I've already looked on Ebay and I found a 42l tank for £60. BUT, do I really need it?

That's an interesting read! There's a message there, that's for sure ..... don't bother with changing to the larger tank! LOL!
