hi there all i have just bought a Audi a2 1.4 tdi sport 02 plate used and just noticed that the gears are stiff going into 1.2.rev the rest of the gears seem to be ok can anyone shed some light

Possibly cable adjustment. Not tried it myself as I havent had this problem but there are two cables that fit in to the selector on top of the gearbox.Perhaps someone with experience of this could advise you better!

Hi A2SPORT, welcome to the A2oc.
I agree with DAZ. If the change is stiff but the gears don't grate then its most likely that the linkage needs adjusting or the cables need changing

Cheers Spike

I had my gearbox oiled thinking that the stiff gearbox would go away, it seemed a bit smoother for a few days but a week later and my gearbox seems to be worse. I've noticed that it sort of grinds now a little on first gear and second gear. The other gears seem to be ok, except for reverse! It takes a few goes to get it into first sometimes.

Hi richard
Did they use genuine Audi gearbox oil ?
I have read on other owners club web sites that different brands of synthetic oil, even of the correct viscosity, can make the gearchange worse.

Cheers Spike

No not sure what oil it was but it was fully synth, if the other gears are ok its not the gearbox (ie: new one needed)?

Dont want to sound doom and gloom but I had a similar problem and had to have the linkages replaced (this was after adjustment, lubrication etc was attempted) ended up costing near £1000 in all (under warranty thankfully!)

umm maybe I can upgrade the warranty I have, hopefully after a month to claim but I haven't seen too many good reviews. I noticed someone on here had a lumley insurance policy that replaced stuff on there car without many complications. I can't find many details around

other gear question

my 1.4tdi::confused:

all gears work fine...the stick springs back into mid-neutral from the 5th gate, but not from the 1st/2nd gate.. if that makes sense?

trying again.. going from 2nd to 3rd.. the stick doesnt spring right.. and there can be a tendancy (huh hem for my wife) to select 1st instead or 3rd...

anyone observed the same - normal? solutions?

thanks
graeme

Hi Graeme
I checked the gearchange on my car today. The stick is spring loaded to go into neutral in the middle of the 3 -4 gate. EG move the stick from first or second gear into neutral and let go - it springs into the 3-4 gate. Same applies if the lever is moved out of 5th.
Hope this makes sense

Cheers Spike

springing stick

thanks spike - that makes sense

my doesn't spring ;-(

don't know if it can be fixed easilty - or its a 'just live with it'
