Gear cables.

I've just been browsing the market place and it struck me how popular two gear cables are. I can understand that because now they are NLA a breakage could finish off your A2. However looking at 7Zap both cables are the same part number so why would anybody need two spares? I've only ever read of one cable failing and nobody has said the second is on its way out.
This is the question, I have to fit a new AMF at some time so as the cable part numbers are the same I was going to swap the cables over. My logic is one must have a harder time than the other so swapping them will prolong the total life of both. Is this nonsense?

Just a guess, but I think that changes into 1st, and 3rd, tend to be more forceful, something to do with pushing forward, especially into first. By the time you select 4th and 5th, you're going well, so changes are more relaxed. So the cable that's doing the pulling for forward lever movement would be my candidate for most wear.
Mac.

That's true, also there are more forward and back movements than there are side to side.

I've been having trouble with 3rd gear for the last 6 months or so. Some days it's fine, some days it's a fight!!
If it is just 3rd gear take a look at your selector tower. Wiggle the input shaft around and if there is any noticeable sloppiness that is most probably your problem.

Gear cable disaster - any ideas?
May I join this conversation in relation to a 2002 TDI 75 with 242 k miles... Some members on here have already seen my earlier stories and have kindly helped with replies.
Gear changing was becoming difficult. One morning, stuck in reverse with cold engine, wanted to go places - big yank, got it out, but bye bye 2nd and 4th gears. Was already awaiting time at garage for swap out of original EWQ box for JDD. Garage had warned me that the problem may be the cable/s and this confirmed, but we could not source any replacement so the garage managed to get it working again. JDD box fited, new clutch, new starter while they were there, MOT etc etc. Car has driven ~500 miles since. Some trouble this morning getting out of reverse, but not too difficult to shift, but then no 2nd and no 4th. And now after a little investigation, no nothing. Cable has snapped. No gears.
  • Does anyone breaking cars have a spare cable - (it's the backwards and forwards one)? I know they are like hen's teeth to get hold of.
  • Or can anyone recommend someone who might be able to make one up for me?
  • Or does anyone know of a car for sale that's no good for anything else but could solve my problem?
I do have alternative transport meantime, but any remedies would be much appreciated! This car has been my daily drive for 12 years; have been hoping for it not to end like this. Any suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers
Andrew
