Gear linkage adjustment

Yes, the other week he retro fitted an original head unit into mine to replace the butchery that had taken place with the wiring.

I bumped into him a few weeks ago just as he was fitting a curtain airbag system for someone. Looked like a massive job.

I'd have tried the bearing replacement route as well but it's an integral part of the whole shift tower column on the 1.4 petrol gearbox (only the top rubber seal ring is replaceable). That was £149 + VAT from Audi so settled on lubricating it and replacing counterweight. Just have to see if it's a lasting fix for the problem.

Nah - replacing the tower weight only a temporary fix as problem came back after a while, so not the root cause. But have now found a quick and cheap fix for the sticky fourth to third gear change problem for 02T gearboxes. Might be worth a try for the other gearboxes too.

Picked up a cheap deadstock replacement shift tower unit and was looking inside to see how it works. The two tubes on the base of the tower hold spring loaded ball bearings which keep the shift column in place and guide it through the gate movements. Aside from the sleeve bearing these are another moving part that needs lubrication so figured could have something to do with the intermittent sticky gear change.

The breather vent on the top of the tower sits above these bearings so just pull off the black plastic vent cover and use a small funnel to slowly add some gear oil. Work the gears through the gate, add a bit more oil and repeat a few times.

Did this about 4 weeks ago and gear change immediately back to normal. Will see how long it lasts and if same fix works again. If not time to fit the new tower.

They did say that they'd completed about six of these refurbishments recently.

Any comment on how long the job took and the cost of the parts?

WOM is very far away but I also have an issue with difficult to select gears - particularly parlay when you need to!

Skooshing PTFE or lithium grease spray onto the selector tower seems to ease it temporarily so I think mine may also be needing love.

I've gotten the hang of half selecting second to push into first when I'm driving but that surely isn't normal?

Any idea of costs and difficulty welcome.

have you tried the fix in the post above yours Pinky ?

Never done this myself but have thought about it, both of my TDI gearboxes are silky smooth (after adjusting the gear cable linkages)

Cheers,

I just saved it to print and add to my 'to do' list. I'm planning on taking apart the centre tunnel to fit my new USB charging points so will get to it then.

I'm not sure how people can get into their engine to do such fiddly things - I don't fit at all!

Cheers Paul.
