gearbox issues changing down and occasional change to 3rd while cold is sloppy

this has happened to two of my cars now, first on a seat arosa tdi and now my a2 tdi, im assuming there must be others who have experienced the same and fixed it? arosa had done 104 k and a2 has done 118 k. wont change down from 5th to 4th, 4th to 3rd but will happliy change from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. the only way of changing down is by pretending to change into 2nd but slipping it into either 3rd 4th or 5th, any advice apprichiated, regards jake

Your gear stick cable proberly needs adjusting, I don't know how you do it I'm afraid. But there are others on here who know how.

It would not do any harm to change your gear box oil as well. It is not changed during servicing. Some members here have found there was not a lot of oil left when upgrading the 5th gear. For £15 of oil and 1/2 hour of labour it gives peace of mind. The recommendation on here is to do it when you change your cam belt and water pump.

thanks alot guys, if this is the problem im seriously grateful i didnt just go out and buy a gearbox! il let you know how i get on, thanks for the advice, jake
