gearbox oil

The genuine Audi stuff from my dealer...

This is what I used when I did a gearbox oil change many years ago but I wonder if there is anything higher spec and better now that oils have come on a bit over the last 20 years, much like we use 507 spec engine oil over the 505 original spec now? Not that there was anything wrong with it but just a thought?

I tried some generic gear oil GL4/5 in my TDi as didn't have any genuine Audi stuff to hand and I was keen to drop the 205K oil out of the box. Took the view that almost any new oil would be better than the old. as the shift quality was appalling, even after my usual trio of tower bearing / cable and selector mech lubes.

Well, I have to say, the change stayed poor. Dropped that oil out and went to the genuine Audi and shift is improved remarkably and the box is a fraction quieter as well.

I had a similar improvement in my B5.5 Passat 130 TDi: in fact, that was a miraculous result.

I vote for new genuine Audi oil. It'll be about £20 for two one litre bottles and well worth every penny.

Chaps honestly, ask Opie oils - they really know their stuff and have a free advisory service.

They will have some better oils for a decent price - or else ones offering equivalent wear protection at a very decent price. I think they have a sale on at the moment too!

This is very old data but VW/Audi own brand gearbox oil has a very low viscosity compared to virtually all of the 'high spec full synthetic' offerings from other reputable brands. Over the years I've tried some of the others but always gone back to the genuine Audi stuff as the gearchange was always better, particularly in colder weather
I do respect Opie Oils but they can only recommend what brands they sell

Cheers Spike
