Which of the three head units fitted to the A2 is the best in terms of sound quality?

Leaving out the tape-only Chorus II, the posts I can find through a quick Google say that the specs of Concert II and Symphony II are identical except for the 6CD vs 1CD, just that there is an extra mid-range tone control on the Symphony II. I'd be surprised if there was any difference between the tape players in the Chorus II and Symphony II either.

For improved sound obviously look into BOSE, and/or (in a double-DIN car) an RNS-E which as I understand it contains much better components.

To my ears this one in the 55 plate does not sound any where near as good

The Concert II is certainly my favourite of the original A2 head units, though I don't believe I'd have said that it sounded better than the Symphony II. I'd be surprised if their internals were different; I bet they use the same receiver, DAC, preamp, power amp, etc.

Thanks for the info.
The new car on a 03 plate has a chorus tape head unit and a boot mounted cd changer. I have no cassettes nowdays so I was wondering if it is a direct plug and play for a concert cd head unit. I notice there is a yellow socket on the back of the concert which isnot on the chorus.

There should be a lead with the yellow plug on your 03 car (which will fit the Concert 2 unit).........it would seem someone's fitted an earlier cassette player to it, just pull out the old unit and have a look at the looms ...…...You'll need a code for the new unit as its security locked.

Electrically speaking, it's a direct swap, though the software settings of the Concert II CD player that you install may need to be changed. If the Concert II was once installed in an A2 with just front speakers, and is now being fitted in a car with Bose, a MFSW and a CD changer (for instance), the software settings will be wrong. Similarly, if the Concert II was once installed in an A6, its software settings may be wrong.
The yellowy-orange FAKRA connector on the back of the Concert II is for a diversity aerial system. If your A2 doesn't have the diversity aerial system, it doesn't matter; nothing gets connected, and the software settings are changed accordingly.

Of course, you'll need the 4-digit unlock code for the Concert II.

Cheers,

Tom
