Glow plugs

Be aware that the J numbers and the numbers on the relays almost certainly won't be the same. Letters followed by two or three digits are components on their wiring diagrams. So 461 could be J179!

Now that I (we) think where the j179 relay is, any comments about putting the relay in a sealed plastic freezer bag and fizzing it for about an hour - then pluging it back it to see if it produces a longer glow plug indicator lamp on start up?

Freezing not fizzing.

Why would that work better than snake oil? At best, take the cover off and clean the contacts. Otherwise buy a new one - 8A0951253. Probably a false economy not to buy new. Are you sure that the relay is the problem? Are you getting power to the socket?

I would think that taking the cover off would not be easy. Getting the relay down to winter conditions would be the easiest option. As the glow plug lamp lights momentarily, it must be assumed that power is getting through to the plugs. I would certainly purchase a new relay as it appears to have been identified.

It's more likely that the CU gets it's temperature from somewhere else. It has two inputs from the ECU. Check fuses S39 and S102. The former's supply arrives via J317 (Terminal 30 Voltage Supply Relay). You can check J317 by putting 12v across term. 85 & 86 and measuring the resistance between term. 30 and 87 - should be very low. J317 is between J179 and the terminal. There's no J52 for an ATL.

Have purchased relay 461 from Local Audi garage part number
y A03G 907 282 B. Initially all description numbers were supplied to Audi parts person, ie to 8A09512353, j179 and 461. First two printout descriptions did not satisfy me that it was the correct item that sensed ambient temperature. Requested parts person to concentrate on the item with 461 on its top. Cost was £99.12. Will pick up item in a couple of days but will not replace original 461 until colder weather is present, when I will compare both cars. I was aware that a 461 relay could have been purchased at half the price via e bay, but my 90 is worth it. To be continued....!
