Information Good days work done

Well I have decided to strip the 1.6 I bought last week, it's a no brainer setting as the wife's car needed some bits and pieces and I was shocked by the price of bits on eBay. A full car as a donor, especially being the same color was a bonus and for only £400

So after blackmailing her indoors I needed a full English breakfast before I started, and it was father's day I started late at 11.

Bits swapped over today are, aero wiper, 2 cup holders replaced, false floor out and fitted, spare wheel and mount done, alarm switch changed, leather steering wheel, handbrake cover and gear knob and gaiter changed and fog lamps striped out ready to fit.

Now time for a cuppa tea and relax, I have earned it.

Next week need to get the rest of the interior out and get it to the valeters, alloys dropped off to get powder coated then off with the panels.

Seems a shame as the engine and box are spot on but hey ho.

With a bit of luck and some time she will end up with a really good TDI for not a lot of money.

Keep smiling

Nic

To be honest Steve it's was not a lot on the mot, 2 front tires, broken rear spring, airbag light on, abs light on and brake pipes, about £150 but I just don't have the space, plus it has a working sunroof and air con which I would like to fit in the TDI, I have taken off one and put back on the 1.6 so I might still end up putting it back on the road. My neighbour is already asking what I'm doing with it.
If space wasn't an issue I would just park it up and sort it eventually.
Just got to many cars parked up, the TDI, my Passat, my Saab, the focus just to many cars

'To be honest'is always a phrase I enjoy reading on this forum.

The simple truth is that these wee cars get old and there's an economic scale. In this case a donor TDI that will benefit from the parts.

We won't keep them all alive and like it or lump it the factory 'holy grail' of UK registered examples may be as likely to be crushed as it is to be driving round this fair country. The moral being -only us lot would mark it's passing with regret.

I'm for preservation in a sensible way ( think I should have a rosette and a manifesto to hand) but we are all going to have to get over the fact that some (almost) serviceable A2 will get split up for parts.

Provided another (cherished) car lives longer and better I see no issue with that provided the motive isn't to score a profit off other A2 owners by finding cars with tasty kit and killing them for profit.

If you wanted to sell the FSI, I'd recommend advertising it for sale on here instead of selling it to a breaker or scrapping it. I'm sure quite a few members would like a small project to tinker with.

It's good too that your TDI has benefitted. :)

Matt.

I will matt I think, but after all the panels are off, glass out it will just be a shell with an engine and box, the engine is sweet as a nut. I hate breaking cars for parts but I an staggered by the stupid prices people are charging for bits on eBay. My Passat is getting on and the more I drove Judy's TDI the more I know I'm going to end up buying one for myself. I don't care about age and mileage I do all my own work anyway, so a nice TDI will end up here soon.
I will advertise the car in the classified and hopefully someone will want it.

I think you put that really well Murdo. In order for the good ones to live on there must be a good supply of good quality reasonably priced spares. As most of you know i'm currently breaking an A2, but I bought a car from a friend that would have been destined for the scrap yard due to non repairable roof damage. I think I have another lined up but once again I have searched for a an A2 with a great amount of structural damage so that it couldn't/shouldn't be put back on the road. I think as long as members are considerate of the marque and don't break decent cars then we should see a good supply of parts at fair prices from people we can trust as apposed to salvage breakers who are only concerned about the profit margin.

I have just been talking to my best friend who is nuts on Mondeo and has scrapped one this weekend, he said he has saved 3 others from going of the road, covered the cost he incurred and made 3 friends along the way, which is a great way to look at it. Both of us potter round the garage weekends anyway, if others benefit that's a bonus. That's always been my way and that's the way I'll always be.
I will run out of room in the loft eventually I guess, if 1 car can save others well that's the way it should be.
If I wasn't in the garage her indoors would only find something for me to do anyway

Advise your friend the error of coveting the blue oval ( exceptions being the RS and XR classic range which are fabulous) - and sway him to the many virtues of the A2. It shouldn't be a hard sell :p

He probably likes the square steering wheel and a handbrake thats easier for the front passenger to operate. :)
