had a cracking thought today

Driving along today i had an idea, years ago i owned a mk4 golf 150 tdi remapped, why oh why did Audi not put that pd engine into the A2? even the 130 lump would have made it a real pocket rocket with easy 50mpg plus potential. Maybe it was heavy or too big but what a great idea.
I'll take an A2 sport tdi150 remapped to 190 please.

Tis not so much about how light the A2 is rather how heavy the 1.9TDI lump is.

That much weight up front would mean dreadful understeer at best.

Now the 1.4TSI petrol would have been interesting for a sporty version.

But I still believe if they'd stuck to their guns and gave us less choice with clever marketing you'd see more A2 1.2 TDIs on UK roads than Priuses and Honda Insights put together!

Yes the 1.4 TDI is actually a 3/4 version of the 1.9TDI, (almost literally 1 cylinder chopped off) shame they couldn't have put a 12 valve version of the 16 valve head on it aka the 2.0 unit has, oh for a bit of development Mr Audi a bit of development

As Mike will tell you, the body is too light to put that much power onto the road.

like my lotus 340r? 190bhp/750kg:p

i think i know what you mean though, the A2 is higher and narrower.
still think the 130/150 lump would have make a great little car.

The A2 is too light and the power is going to the wrong wheels for anything over 150bhp to count.

When accelerating, all the weight is transferred to the back, the front end goes light and the wheels just spin, especially in the wet.

At the outset, the emphasis for the A2 was economy and practicality, not speed and fun, but when they realised it wasn't attracting market interest, Audi realised something must be done, so the Sport model was introduced and the 110PS 1.6FSi engine came in in 2002, followed by an uprated diesel in late 2003.

I firmly believe that an S model was also in the pipeline, but the decision to stop the entire A2 production was taken in mid 2004, so it never appeared. What would have been done to spice up the standard A2 is anyones guess, but a 1.8T is probably the favourite choice, almost certainly the same 150PS unit as fitted to the front wheel drive TT. How the problem of putting down the power would have been overcome is again unknown, but my guess is harder rear suspension and re-designed ESP systems.

I've taken the 1.4 TDi 90 to just about the extent of its capabilities now, just about 140PS and near enough 250 lbs/ft torque, which is 1/3 more than the box is rated at! Any more than this and I suspect the bottom end would fail and I'd have bits of con rod sticking out of the crank case!

Cheers,

Mike

my original shortlist of cars included the fabia vrs, ironicaly the smallest vag car to use the 130pd engine.
i never tested one as the audi seemed to have much more space for 2 kids and the dog, though the residuals were similar.

my original shortlist of cars included the fabia vrs,

I test drove the latest Fabia, in basic 105 bhp TDi "Sport" trim, and it was a simply superb car to drive. Sadly I think it looks dreadful, and I don't think I could ever live with the green illuminated dashboard.

I had a Seat Ibiza TDI 130 before the A2 (similar concept to the Fabia). Superb motorway cruiser - massive acceleration and very economical - but less impressive round corners. And all that weight on the front wheels didn't help the tyre wear. But a big engine in a small car can be a great combination if the chassis is up to it.

I remember a good few years ago whilst on yts as a trainee mechanic,a mate of mine owned a Vauxhall Chevette hsr 2.3 ltr (i believe it was called) and invited me to take a drive, well that machine still has left an impression;) on me (and his upholstery!)

hsr was the wide arched version of the hs, made around 150bhp, that was a huge power output for a hatch in those days.
my favourite was the talbot sunbeam lotus, i actually got to drive one last year, obviously didn't feel that quick compared to modern sports cars but what a classic, how i'd love one in my garage for the car shows in the summer, oops showing my age bit?
